PAY RATE: $58,760 - $71,989

The Salvation Army North and Central Illinois Division provides these services to people in need.

JOB SUMMARY

The Development Director is an integral part of the overall mission of the Army team. This position is responsible for fundraising, communication, consultation, and coordination with local staff across multiple internal departments in support of strategic priorities, contract compliance, and programmatic activities. The primary role is to establish and implement short-and-long-term strategies and operational plans for effective delivery of services, with specific contributions to fundraising and grant-related activities.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:



  • Cultivate donor relationships focusing on the top 20 donors to The Salvation Army in Macon County. Develop a plan to keep these donors involved and informed concerning the Army and its activities and to increase donor financial commitments.
  • Maintain accurate donor records.
  • In coordination with the Divisional Development team and the local Corps Officers, assist in the development of a long-range strategic business plan for both programming and funding opportunities.
  • With the corps officers, develop an overall media/community relations strategy for The Salvation Army in Macon County.
  • Plan, promote, and execute at least one major fundraiser ($50-100K+) in addition to Christmas for The Salvation Army in Macon County.
  • Along with the corps officers, attend direct mail roundtables and be aware of direct mailing campaigns and make necessary changes and suggestions to improve direct mail effectiveness.
  • Schedule and plan with the assistance of the divisional gift advisor a local planned giving seminar a minimum of once annually.
  • Seek and secure new and ongoing funding for Salvation Army programs and services through public and private grants and foundations.
  • Develop and nurture positive relations with funders.
  • Assist Corps Officer with United Way funding presentations.
  • With the input of the corps officers, develop and execute a comprehensive Christmas fundraising campaign (major gifts, corporate gifts, kettle match, red kettle campaign, etc.). Include activities for honorary chairpersons, dignitaries, local celebrities, and a kick-off event. Also, handle the promotion and scheduling of Christmas volunteers and staff for the kettles.
  • Attend and maintain membership in a local service club (official expense).
  • Keep the Army's name and activities before the community through news releases, annual reports, speaking engagements, special events, fundraisers, local website, social media, etc.
  • Cultivate relationships with local media representatives.
  • Keep current with all programs, services, and activities of the Decatur Corps and their funding sources and be able to be conversant about them.
  • With the input of the corps officers, develop a professional, printed, magazine-style Annual Report for publication. A digital copy is to be placed on the corps' website. Obtain sponsors to pay to produce the report.
  • With the assistance of the corps officers and advisory board, schedule, plan, promote, and execute an annual civic meeting. The purpose is to inform and educate the community about activities during the previous year, promote support for the Army, and enhance the Army's image in the community.
  • With the assistance of the corps officers, schedule, plan, promote, and execute an annual volunteer appreciation luncheon/dinner to recognize and show appreciation to the volunteers that generously gave of their time and talents to help The Salvation Army during the previous year.
  • Assist corps officers with advisory board relations, communications, board development, and ongoing training and involvement.
  • Attend annual divisional business seminar.
  • Attend any development conference/seminars that the divisional development director or corps officers may recommend/require.
  • Coordinate and consult with the Divisional Development Director/Department.
  • Any other related duties as necessary.

  • Successfully satisfy the training requirements associated to the position and as required by The Salvation Army.

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Education:

Bachelor's degree in related field, business management or related degree preferred; significant related experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.

Experience:



  • Individuals must have multiple years of experience in fundraising, business marking, communications and community relations. Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, persuasive, passionate and professional.
  • This position must be able to provide credible guidance and oversight regarding funding resources to the leadership, community and team.

JOB LIMITATIONS



  • This individual will only commit Army resources that have been allocated or approved.
  • This individual will adhere to all policies and procedures in carrying out the responsibilities of this position. The individual will keep the Regional/Central Illinois Social Services Director informed of all critical issues relating to their area of responsibility.



PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT



  • This position is required to do light physical work.
  • To successfully perform the essential functions of this position, the employee is regularly required to use standard office equipment including a PC and make a public presentation.
  • The work environment for this position includes an office environment with a moderate to high noise level.
  • This individual must be able to travel to meet the needs of the position, an approved MVR is required.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS



  • This position reports to the local Corps Officer(s) and works in coordination with the Divisional Development Director.
  • In addition, this position will strategically partner with Divisional Advancement Support, specifically the Central Illinois Director of Gifts & Estate Planning Director. This matrix model will provide coordinated efforts amongst the Division and related projects.
