Project/Unit Description

The Electro-Optical Infrared Systems Division (EISD) performs research in all areas of active and passive sensor systems. From basic geometric/radiometric modeling and analysis, through design and fabrication, to test and evaluation in the field, our team provides subject matter expertise to our customers in order to solve their most challenging problems in undersea, ground, airborne, and space domains. EISD is a collection of multi-discipline engineers and scientists encompassing optical, physics, mechanical, electrical, computer, and software domains, among others. Our portfolio consists of research programs in and related to: Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR); Undersea Warfare; Atmospheric Optics; Tactical Imaging, e.g. Degraded Visual Environments (DVE); Automatic Target Recognition; Intelligence Processing, Exploitation, and Dissemination (PED); Free-space Optical Communications; Space Situational Awareness (SSA); Tagging, Tracking, and Locating (TTL); LIDAR; Remote Sensing; High-energy laser systems; etc.


Job Purpose

The Algorithm & Analysis Engineer is responsible for the development and support of state-of-the-art algorithms involving data fusion, sensor fusion, machine learning, manned/unmanned avionics improvement programs, and genetic programming. The Algorithm & Analysis Engineer focuses on the design, analysis, software/hardware implementation, optimization, profiling, and experimental evaluation of computer algorithms, bridging the gap between algorithm theory and practical applications of algorithms in software engineering. Additionally, the Algorithm & Analysis Engineer conducts statistical analysis of multi-modal and time-varying data to characterize and quantify system qualities and deficiencies, resulting in recommendations and development of improvements.


Key Responsibilities

  • Perform data cleaning and fundamental data analysis, with guidance only as needed, generating new tools with significant reusability
  • Design and execute algorithm tests with limited oversight
  • Serve in a leading role in algorithm design discussions for defined portions of programs
  • Design larger portions of algorithms and testing with minimal oversight
  • Lead sections of technical report execution
  • Lead discussions with sponsors for large portions of research
  • Work with independence at sponsor sites under guidance of technical leads
  • Materially contribute to discussions for technical journal articles and conference presentations
  • Conduct literature searches related to research focus areas
  • Mentor student researchers and facilitate their technical development and tasking


Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of (EO)/Infrared (IR) sensor systems (e.g. imaging systems, LIDAR)
  • Proficient in one or more modern programming languages, including at least one of the of following: C, C++, C#
  • Experience developing EO/IR algorithms and analyzing data in both Python & Matlab, e.g. object classification from imagery, segmentation of point cloud data, localization and mapping, etc.
  • Proficiency developing and executing test plans for training and validating AI/ML algorithms
  • Experience leading teams on software projects, including common tools/techniques (e.g. CI pipelines, unit testing, data visualization, version control)
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOD Secret Security Clearance


Preferred Qualifications

  • Active Secret Clearance
  • Master's Degree or Higher
  • Experience with track and sensor fusion
  • Experience in Modeling and Simulation (M&S) of optical systems, radar systems, communications systems, or electronic warfare systems.
  • Experience developing algorithms for distributed, asynchronous, high-performance, or resource-constrained systems
  • Experience with Robotics and related frameworks (e.g. Robot Operating System)
  • Experience with high-speed image and/or signal processing techniques
  • 5+ years technical leadership experience on Government-sponsored programs

  • 5-19 years of related experience with a Bachelor's degree in Aerospace Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, Imaging Science, or other related disciplines.
  • 3-17 years of related experience with a Masters' degree in Aerospace Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, Imaging Science, or other related disciplines.
  • 0-4 years of related experience with a Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, Imaging Science, or other related disciplines.

Due to our research contracts with the U.S. federal government, candidates for this position must be U.S. Citizens.


Clearance Type Required
