The Department of Otolaryngology and Communication Sciences is seeking a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant to support the Pediatric ENT Inpatient Service located in in Milwaukee, WI at Children's Hospital.

The subspecialty of the Pediatric ENT Program (Otolaryngology Program) provides specialized medical and surgical care to infants, children, and teens who have problems with their ears, noses, or throats. The Division of Pediatric Otolaryngology at the Medical College of Wisconsin is the largest group of fellowship-trained pediatric otolaryngologists in the State of Wisconsin - an incredible opportunity to learn from and work with the best!

The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) works as a member of a multidisciplinary health care team who will contribute to excellence in program administration, patient care, patient safety, research, quality improvement, and teaching.

The Ideal Candidate will be an experienced APP or Clinician looking to be part of a thriving and very collaborative academic practice at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW). Areas of responsibility will include, but not be limited to providing direct patient care to Pediatric Patients in an Inpatient/Hospital setting.

In this role you will work in conjunction with the department's Pediatric Otolaryngology Division specialist to manage the inpatient service, see consults in the Emergency Room and urgent patient visits in clinic. You will also work in support of the specialists with complicated patients and ensure appropriate continuity of care for all program patients along with developing and implementing clinical pathways/protocols, participate in quality projects, and implement Pediatric Otolaryngology Division initiatives.

  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary health care teams in diagnosis and treatment of conditions requiring pediatric otolaryngology intervention in an inpatient environment as a member of the Otolaryngology team.
  • Assume in-house first call for the Pediatric Otolaryngology inpatients during designated coverage hours, respond promptly to all pages and questions related to the care of patients in assigned inpatient services and emergency room.
  • Participate in sign-out activities from the daytime care team and sign off to the night team following completion of shift.
  • Write admission and discharge orders. Teach, counsel, and assist patients and families regarding diet, diseases, treatment and follow-up care and respond to patients calling the inpatient unit.
  • Performs procedures as trained, including ear examination and cerumen removal, foreign body removal for ear and nose, nasal cautery for epistaxis.
  • Sees patients independently with physician collaboration
  • Carries out evidence-based medicine
  • Develops and implements clinical pathways/protocols for medical conditions, quality projects, and implementing pediatric otolaryngology initiatives.

Core Advanced Practice Responsibilities

  • Perform comprehensive histories and physical exams, identifies normal and abnormal findings, including physical, cognitive and psychosocial status.
  • Order, perform, and interpret screening and diagnostic procedures and tests, and appropriately communicates and documents information
  • Write accurate and timely progress notes, procedure notes, and/or admission and transfer orders
  • Develop pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical treatment plans.
  • Monitor effectiveness of plan of care
  • Educate patients on disease and treatment plans.
  • Perform procedures as trained and appropriately credentialed.
  • Document within the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) and completes other necessary documents.
  • Collaborate and/or consults with physicians and other health care providers as appropriate.
  • Educates, counsels, and assists patients and families regarding current health problems, health maintenance activities and preventive behaviors.
  • Attend required training and meets key regulatory requirements, including those of the privileging institution, CMS, and the Join Commission.
  • Acquires information on the most current development and trends in the Physician Assistant field and/or Nurse Practitioner field, through educational programs, in-services, professional associates, and current literature.

The hospital, with locations in Milwaukee and Northeast Wisconsin, is recognized as one of the leading pediatric health care centers in the United States. Minimum Education:

Advanced Practice Nurse: Master's Degree or higher in Nursing
Physician Assistant: Bachelor's Degree or higher in Physician Assistant Studies
