Brown and Caldwell (BC) has a rewarding career opportunity for a self-motivated engineer to join the Building Mechanical team.This Senior Building Mechanical Engineer position will work with senior technical staff on various building mechanical projects, primarily in the water and wastewater industry. In-person or hybrid (2-3 days in office/week) work arrangements from one of our offices in Sacramento, CA; Salt Lake City, UT; Phoenix, AZ; Las Vegas, NV or Dallas, TX is preferred. Remote work from the Central, Mountain or Pacific time zones may be allowed but candidates will be expected to travel to offices/client worksites as required.

Detailed Description:

The successful candidate will support projects locally, regionally, and nationally and will have strong verbal and written communication skills, be highly organized and responsive, capable of working in a diverse team environment, and able to handle multiple tasks with competing priorities.

Responsibilities may include:



  • Assist the National Building Mechanical Leader with resource and staff planning on a regional basis.
  • Interact directly with Portfolio Design Managers, Portfolio Discipline Leaders and Local Leaders to determine project staffing and availability.
  • Perform engineering design work with the building mechanical group.
  • Work on engineering designs preparing reports, construction plans, specifications, calculations, equipment selection, and cost estimates for various projects.
  • Check performance or conformity with plans and specifications through field inspection and testing.
  • Assist with the preparation of technical memoranda, reports and electronic deliverables.
  • Assist with studies, permitting and alternative analysis.
  • Prepare and review technical memoranda, reports, drawings, specifications, and miscellaneous contract documents and deliverables.
  • Coordinate and communicate with others on projects to ensure proper and timely execution of the work.
  • Participate in BC's QA/QC process.
  • Participate in field activities such as site investigations.
  • Assist with data collection, manipulation, analysis, and documentation.
  • Manage and review work of external partners.
  • Direct and mentor junior engineering staff.


Required Qualifications:



  • B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering field from an ABET accredited program.
  • P. E. license.
  • NCEES registration required, or commitment to obtain within 6 months.
  • Minimum of 8 years of experience in municipal discipline engineering designs and consulting within the water and wastewater industry.
  • Knowledge of piping and ductwork layout and design of 3D piping systems.
  • Ability to work with Designers/Drafters in Revit/BIM environment.
  • Experience in HVAC and plumbing piping design.
  • Ability to work independently while guiding junior engineers.
  • Experience using general office software for communications (MS Word and MS Outlook).
  • Good written and verbal communication skills essential.


Preferred Qualifications:



  • Knowledge of NFPA 820 and other NFPA codes for extreme environments is a plus.
  • Experience using engineering calculation software (MathCAD, Excel, AFT Arrow/Fathom).
  • Experience with Microstation and Bentley products is a plus.
  • Proficient using CAD software (Revit and AutoCad).
  • Experience in Design Build project delivery.
  • Willingness to achieve multi-state P.E. licensure required within 6 months.


Salary Range: The anticipated starting pay range for this position is based on the employee's primary work location and may be more or less depending upon skills, experience, and education. These ranges may be modified in the future.

Location A: $106,000 - $145,000

Location B: $117,000 - $160,000
