Job Profile Summary
The Research Coordinator works with the Laura Rodriguez Research Institute team and supports the development of quality research protocols and studies at Family Health Centers of San Diego. The job duties and time commitment of the RC will vary with each research project. This position is per-diem and grant funded.

General Job Description

The Research Coordinator oversees and performs day-to-day operations of specific programs/grants related to population health research, counseling and testing, and health education services for Family Health Centers of San Diego (FHCSD). In this role, job duties include supporting research studies by providing direct patient case work and providing oversight of patient cases from direct reports, tracking deliverables for assigned grants/programs, and report writing. In this role, the incumbent is expected to be flexible in fulfilling a variety of program roles for the day-to-day operations of specific programs/grants related to outreach, counseling, case management and health education services for Family Health Centers of San Diego.

Job Roles

  • Under supervision, the Research Coordinator will be assigned to coordinate multiple funded research studies involving human subjects that are being conducted at FHCSD.
  • The incumbent will coordinate human subject's submissions by preparing applications, informed consents and protocol documents for submission to the Institutional Review Board (IRB).
  • Preparation of protocols, training manuals, grants, manuscripts, presentations, and reports.
  • Assist Principal Investigators with tracking grant proposals to ensure compliance with FHCSD, State, and Federal agency requirements, IRB regulations and human subject's requirements.
  • Assist with initiation, implementation and management of research studies.
  • Interpreting research protocols; recruiting participants; screening for eligibility, monitoring and timely reporting of adverse events, toxicities and protocol deviations; scheduling participant visits, coordinating clinical, laboratory and data activities; collecting and entering research data; maintaining accurate and complete clinical research files.
  • Assist with basic health education on HIV prevention services.
  • Conduct routine queries of FHCSD electronic health record (EHR) system to identify patients that need follow up appointments.
  • Manage study appointments for patients, including scheduling related services, intake appointments, insurance screening services, clinic appointments, telephone call reminders, follow-up visits etc.
  • Follow participants from the initial clinic appointment through clinical diagnostic evaluation.
  • Interface with FHCSD's extensive case management infrastructure to guide patients through testing and medication acquisition.
  • Interface with FHCSD's extensive insurance eligibility infrastructure to aid in assessment and acquisition of insurance for uninsured patients.
  • Provide a variety of support services such as arranging various forms of financial assistance, arranging interpretation services, ensuring coordination of services among medical staff,
  • provide social and emotional support among other services [or connect patients to community and social support services].
  • Provide navigation services to patients at several FHCSD locations. In addition to the activities below, these services include communicating with patients (in person or by other means), identifying and addressing patient barriers to care (e.g., fear, knowledge, clinic visit logistics, etc.), preparing and facilitating patient interaction with clinical providers, and providing support and empathy.
  • Organize and maintain in good condition all equipment, supplies, incentives, and paperwork needed for all classes and activities.
  • Maintain excellent data entry practices to ensure effective patient tracking and efficient evaluation.
  • Attend regular meetings for related studies and biweekly LRRI meetings.
  • Working directly with the Project/Program Manager or Associate Director to track deliverables for assigned project(s) on a regular basis, ensuring compliance with grant and departmental requirements.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education/Certifications/Licenses/Registrations

  • A college degree in biological life science, Public Health, Social Sciences, Health Care Administration, or a closely related field required.
  • Traveling between sites and other locations is required as an essential function of the job. Must have a car, a valid California driver's license, and proof of minimum levels of car insurance as required under California law, although limits of $100,000 are recommended. An acceptable driving record is also required. California law requires all drivers to obtain a valid California driver's license within ten days of establishing residency. Mileage and other reimbursement governed by policy.

Experience/Specialized skills (including Language)

  • 1-2 years' experience working in research setting required.
  • Ability to work well in both a team-based environment and independently.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with clinical providers, including physicians.
  • Ability to interact empathetically with patients and people of varied education and socio-economic status.
  • Ability to administer study related questionnaires and assessments.
  • Basic computer literacy ability to comply with department needs and expectations (i.e., electronic medical record documentation, obtaining background information and reports on patients, following up on appointments, etc.).
  • Basic project management and oversight skills.
  • Bilingual (English and Spanish).
  • Demonstrated ability to be culturally sensitive and respect diversity.
  • Knowledge of the community resources, health and social service systems in San Diego County and skill in establishing working relationships with community partners.
  • Knowledge of supervisory practices and techniques, including performance management and employee development.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

If you are hired at Family Health Centers of San Diego, your final base salary compensation will be determined based on factors such as geographic location, jurisdictional requirements, skills, education, and/or experience. In addition to these factors - we believe in the importance of pay equity and consider internal equity of our current team members as a part of any final offer. Please keep in mind that the range mentioned above is what we reasonably expect to pay for the role. Hiring at the maximum of the range would not be typical in order to allow for future and continued salary growth.
