The Joint, Office of the Secretary of Defense, Interagency Division (JOID) provides expert support services to a range of customers spanning across the Department of Defense, Federal Civilian, and international markets. JOID provides a diverse portfolio of analytical and programmatic capabilities to help our customers make informed decisions on their most challenging issues. JOID assists the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) in developing leading edge technologies to counter WMD in support of Combatant Commands (CCMDs) and transitioning these technologies to military services CCMDs. SPA provides expertise across the full range of chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and high-yield explosives (CBRNE) WMD, Counter Improvised Threat and Countering Threat Network technologies to support understanding, detection, identification, characterization, denial, control, disabling, defeating, disposing, safeguarding the force, managing consequences, and test and evaluation in support of military and civilian operations. We have a near-term need for Biological Threat Scientist to provide onsite support out of SPA's Lorton, VA Facility (near Fort Belvoir). Responsibilities The candidate will apply a strong background in chemical and biological defense, complemented by expertise in physical detection technologies. Provide scientific and project management support within a military/governmental context. Engage with warfighters to assess operational needs and gather feedback on emerging technologies, ensuring that development efforts align with real-world applications. Draft technology transition agreements and evaluate proposals related to joint science and technology initiatives, and navigate complex bureaucratic processes. Apply strong strategic planning skills to identify capability gaps and set priorities that align with program objectives. Consolidate and coordinate technical and strategic responses, often working with minimal guidance and through ambiguity. Apply a solid understanding of artificial intelligence applications in the context of defense, particularly in relation to enhancing chemical and biological defense programs. Apply familiarity with bioinformatics and systems biology methodologies, as well as advanced mathematical tools for data interpretation. Create effective documentation for both technical audiences and senior leadership. Review technical documents for validity, and facilitate cross-communication regarding program priorities. Provide logistical support for meetings with government clients and performers, monitor funding documentation, and manage programmatic metrics. Leverage expertise to impact crucial defense initiatives aimed at protecting against chemical and biological threats. Qualifications Required:
PhD in chemistry, biology, or other biological science related field with 6+ years of experience in science and technology program management positions
