About the School of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at the Georgia Institute of Technology

The School of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences (EAS) is highly interdisciplinary and covers broadly all fields of Earth and space science. EAS hosts a range of undergraduate degrees, including B.S. programs in Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences (AOS), Solid Earth and Planetary Sciences (SEP), and Environmental Science (ENVS), and hosts a distinct interdisciplinary Ph.D. program in Ocean Science and Engineering in collaboration with the School of Biological Sciences and Environmental Engineering. Job Summary

The Laboratory Manager is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the laboratory, including the execution of experiments, the maintenance of equipment, and the adherence to safety protocols. This position focuses on the technical aspects of laboratory management, requiring strong organizational skills and attention to detail to ensure that research projects are completed accurately and efficiently.

Responsibilities

Job Duty 1 -
Manage the daily operations of the laboratory by ensuring that experiments are conducted according to established protocols and timelines.

Job Duty 2 -
Prepare and maintain laboratory equipment and materials by performing routine maintenance and troubleshooting technical issues as they arise.

Job Duty 3 -
Conduct experiments and data analysis independently, ensuring that all findings are documented accurately and reported in a timely manner.

Job Duty 4 -
Maintain accurate records of laboratory activities, including inventory management, reagent usage, and safety inspections.

Job Duty 5 -
Support compliance with safety regulations by regularly inspecting the laboratory environment and reporting any hazards or safety concerns to the appropriate personnel.

Job Duty 6 -
Assist in the training of new laboratory personnel by providing instruction on equipment usage, safety protocols, and laboratory procedures.

Job Duty 7 -
Monitor the progress of ongoing research projects by compiling and analyzing data to ensure that objectives are met and deadlines are adhered to.

Job Duty 8 -
Participate in professional development opportunities to enhance technical skills and stay updated on best practices in laboratory management.

Job Duty 9 -
Collaborate with researchers to provide technical support and expertise in the design and execution of experimental procedures.

Job Duty 10 -
Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Educational Requirements
Associate's Degree in a related discipline or equivalent combination of education and experience. Advanced certification may be preferred or required.

Required Experience
Two or more years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred Educational Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in either Earth or Environmental Science with upper-level coursework in geochemistry, a related discipline or equivalent.

Preferred Experience

  • Experience with coordinating and implementing laboratory class sections for large classes that satisfy general education requirements
  • Strong organizational and written and oral communication skills
  • Familiarity with operation of scientific instrumentation
  • Familiarity with environmental field work

Salary range: $70,000.00 - $85,000.00

  • Responsible for maintaining equipment needed for laboratory sections, performing routine maintenance and troubleshooting of technical issues as they arise
  • Responsible for ordering necessary supplies and maintaining accurate records for inventory management
  • Support compliance with safety regulations by regularly inspecting laboratory environment and reporting any hazards or safety concerns to the appropriate personnel
  • Provide training and written materials covering equipment usage, safety protocols, and laboratory procedures to undergraduate and graduate student teaching assistants who will be leading the laboratory sections
  • Provide guidance and direction to teaching assistants leading these laboratory sections, responding to issues as they arise
