Overview

HJF is seeking a Senior Research Associate to support disease surveillance and control programs worldwide and conduct research to address global health challenges that affect military personnel. The incumbent will perform biological specimen processing and extraction, nucleic acid purification, RNA, reverse transcription, PCR amplification, PCR-based assays, and sequencing. The responsibilities also include involvement with study design, data processing, data analysis and interpretation, project summary reports, publications, grant proposals and collaborations with project partners.

This position will be in support of the Molecular Biology Department, within the Viral Diseases Program (VDP), located at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR) in Silver Spring, MD.

The Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine (HJF) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing military medicine. Responsibilities

  • Extensive hands-on laboratory experience and in-depth scientific knowledge in molecular biology techniques, including biological specimen processing, nucleic acid extraction and purification, RNA reverse transcription, PCR amplification, PCR-based assays, and sequencing methodologies.
  • Ability to handle molecular biology and sequencing data and use software such as Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint and Geneious Prime.
  • Skilled in preparing grant proposals, project reports, research presentations, and scientific manuscripts within the field of molecular biology
  • Authored at least one first-author, peer-reviewed publication in the field of molecular biology

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Assigned Lead: May recommend the following: employee hiring, disciplinary action, and starting salaries; provide input on employee performance evaluations.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Master's Degree required.
  • Minimum of 9-10 years experience required.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of extremely complex laboratory procedures.
  • Ability to meet deadlines of projects.
  • Good communication and analytical skills.
  • Capable of independently developing, drafting and submitting research proposals.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a T1/Public Trust background check.

Work Environment

  • This position will take place primarily in a laboratory or office setting.

Compensation

  • The annual salary range for this position is $88,600-$100,000. Actual salary will be determined based on experience, education, etc.
