Field Battalion Chief in Pima County, AZ

Pay: $110,000 Yearly Salary

Job Summary:

Plans, organizes and directs the emergency service operations of a shift (A, B or C), that is part of a full-service fire/EMS/rescue emergency response agency. They are also the primary representative of the department in emergency and non-emergency service incidents at the local level.

Candidate Profile:

The ideal candidate for the position of Field Battalion Chief shall have demonstrated abilities as a proactive leader, a strong communicator, and a highly engaged officer with strong, ethical decision-making abilities. He/she will be focused on high standards of customer service and operational effectiveness and efficiency and will embrace developing and maintaining relationships both within the organization and within the community. Additionally, the ideal candidate will exhibit integrity, loyalty, commitment to lifelong learning, courage in his/her convictions, and a passion for the fire service.

Essential Functions:

Operational Objectives

  • Manage a wide variety of emergency and non-emergency operations within the fire department to include firefighting tactics, fire suppression, fire and environmental safety, emergency medical services, rescue and salvage operations, and the training and safety of personnel.
  • Administers overall operations of all fire personnel and fire stations on an assigned shift, providing command at significant emergency incidents.
  • Ensures the implementation of goals, objectives, policies, procedures and work standards.
  • Visits all direct reports during the work week.
  • Maintains relationships with strategic local municipalities and political leaders.
  • Monitors and manages key performance indicators and operational performance data

Profit & Loss Objectives

  • Manages assets within the assigned area.
  • Is accountable for fiscal management of area assigned.

Strategic Planning and Development

  • Creates a culture that provides exceptional service at all levels.
  • Creates an environment to ensure Rural/Metro is the employer of choice.
  • Analyzes intelligence data and provides recommendations for future action plans.
  • Develops brand and name awareness.
  • Represents the Department at political events, trade shows, recruitment events, industry meetings, etc.

Human Resource Management

  • Build the organization, identify and retain talent, and prepare employees for promotion.
  • Provides direction to direct reports to initiate appropriate levels of training, and to promote an environment consistent with Rural/Metro culture throughout the area assigned.
  • Accountability for following Collective Bargaining Agreements within areas assigned.
  • Conducts timely and informative meetings with staff. Disseminates information in a timely manner.
  • Overall accountability for compliance with department policies and procedures as well as compliance in assigned areas.
  • Support department initiatives.

Compliance

  • Complies and enforces all policies and procedures.
  • Ensures and inspects paperwork for accuracy and compliance.
  • Responsible for escalating concerns regarding questionable paperwork to appropriate management.
Additional Duties:

Systems Skills

  • A working knowledge of MS Office.
  • Use data from different sources to identify issues and quickly identify the central or underlying issues in a complex situation.

Other requirements

  • Travel occasionally within the operational region.
  • Must have a valid driver's license.
  • May be assigned coordination duties such as Special Operations Chief, Wildland Chief, etc.

Education and Experience Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited university or college in Fire Science, Business, Leadership, Public Administration, or another similar field; or, currently enrolled in one of the previously mentioned bachelor's programs with a graduation date prior to January 2027 (must be able to demonstrate current enrollment).
  • 10 years of full-time Fire/EMS experience, including at least three (3) years at the rank of Captain or higher in a career department.
  • Arizona or National EMT Certification or ability to obtain within six months.
  • Fire Instructor I - IFSAC or Pro Board
  • Fire Officer I - IFSAC or Pro Board
  • Successful completion of IS 100, 200, 700, and 800.
  • Proven knowledge of local, state and federal rules and regulations as applied to the fire service.
Preferred Requirements:
  • Master's degree from an accredited university or college in Fire Science, Business, Leadership, Public Administration, or another similar field.
  • 10 years of full-time Fire/EMS experience, including at least five (5) years at the rank of Battalion Chief or higher in a career department.
  • Arizona or National Paramedic Certification or ability to obtain within six months.
  • Incident Safety Officer
  • Fire Instructor II - IFSAC or Pro Board
  • Fire Officer II - IFSAC or Pro Board
  • Successful completion of IS 100, 200, 700, 800; and ICS 300 and 400
  • Certified as a Blue Card Incident Commander Instructor
  • Designated as a Chief Training Officer (CTO) or Chief Fire Officer (CFO) or Chief EMS Officer (CEMSO)
