Job Summary

Milwaukee Public Schools seeks exceptional Instructional Coach: English for Multilingual Learners (EML) candidates who are highly qualified and knowledgeable to join our community of teachers, learners, and leaders.

The English for Multilingual Learners (EML) Instructional Coach is a non-evaluative, non-supervisory teacher position that will work at the district level to support instruction that develops multilingual learner proficiency in both content and language. EML Instructional Coaches will collaborate closely with the ESL Curriculum Specialist, the Bilingual Education Curriculum Specialist, departmental team members, and district-level personnel to support strong academic outcomes for students through language and content frameworks as well as the district's expectations for student achievement. This position is assigned at the district level.

Qualifications

Education Requirements:

  • A minimum of five (5) years of successful teaching experience in ESL within Milwaukee Public Schools as a fully certified teacher is required.
  • Valid professional license #1395 is required.
  • National Board Certified or Master's degree preferred
  • Strong background and knowledge of ESL/Multilingual Learner pedagogy and best practices for educating students in K-12 education.

Experience Requirements:

  • Experience in writing and implementing lessons and units of instruction.
  • Strong background knowledge of the MPS K-12 curriculum.
  • Experience in providing professional development to adult learners.
  • Fluent in a language other than English or experience studying a new language.

Essential Functions:

  • Designs and presents district- and school-level professional development around English Language Development (ELD) and content integrated instruction, the ESL program, and best practices for strengthening outcomes for students identified as English Learners (ELs).
  • Provides and models ELD-based literacy strategies, including interdisciplinary strategies that matches content area frameworks to address the diverse strengths and needs among the EL population districtwide.
  • Collaborates with content area instructional coaches and school-based staff by facilitating professional dialogue that addresses lesson planning for multilingual students.
  • Develops and models how to use curriculum guides along with district-adopted and approved resources when working with multilingual students.
  • Collaborates with department staff to support accurate and timely identification procedures and program placement for EL students.
  • Uses data from multiple sources to determine the needs of individual schools and classrooms and offers best practices to address areas of need.
  • Assists school-based teams, MPS departments, and divisions with planning and implementing improvement plans that have the goal of developing full English proficiency among EL students and supporting multiliteracy and multiculturalism.
  • Understands and conveys the multi-tiered system of support for EL students, including how ESL is tier 1 and the integral factors when working with EL students, such as identification date, prior schooling experiences, literacy skills in home language, and cultural considerations.
  • Communicates the definition and goals of the Bilingual Dual Language and Stand-Alone ESL programs.
  • Supports schools that do not have an ESL program but enroll EL students by providing professional development and consultation.
  • Establishes and maintains a networking system with outside agencies that support multilingual learners; disseminates information and resources.
  • Collects and reports activities that support the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), Title III, and Bilingual-Bicultural State Aid.
  • Self-selects professional development opportunities annually to stay abreast of current research and best practice in the areas of instruction and assessment of EL students, special education, data gathering, analysis, and presentation.
  • Maintains accurate schedules and records; efficiently complete paperwork.
  • Manages multiple initiatives, seek clarification, and communicate regularly with supervisor(s).
  • Researches and relays relevant and current information around culturally- and linguistically-relevant aspects of the multilingual learner population in the district.
  • Contributes to the objectives of district-wide parent advisory councils, community-based organizations, institutions of higher education, businesses, and educational agencies.
  • Participates in district wide events such as family engagement of EL students.
  • Performs and completes other duties as assigned.
Pay, Benefits, & Work Schedule

This position is on the 2F - 200-day calendar.
