Job Summary

Milwaukee Public Schools seeks an exceptional Central Service Teacher - First Nations Studies K-8 candidate who is highly qualified and knowledgeable to join our community of teachers, learners, and leaders.

First Nations Studies (FNS) K-8 Teacher is a non-evaluative, non-supervisory teacher position that will provide services to Native American students in K-8 schools where there are high concentrations of First Nations/Native students. This position will work closely with the First Nations Studies Specialist and departmental team members to support strong academic outcomes for Native students. The primary purpose of the First Nations Studies K-8 Teacher is to provide and coordinate culturally relevant academic services to Native American students. The FNS K-8 Teacher ensures the First Nations Studies K-8 students have meaningful access to education. This position is assigned at the district level.

Qualifications

Education Requirements:

  • A minimum of five (5) years of successful teaching experience as a fully certified teacher with emphasis on Math and ELA preferred
  • National Board Certified or Master's Degree preferred
  • Successful completion of the State of Wisconsin Act Summer Institute or to be completed within the first year of working with FNS
  • Successful completion of the Fist Nations Studies Act 31 Workshop to be completed within the first year of working with FNS

Experience Requirements:

  • A minimum of five (5) years of successful teaching experience as a fully certified teacher. Emphasis on Math and ELA is preferred.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience working with Native American students preferred
  • Experience with writing and implementing lessons and units of instruction pertinent to the FNS

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of First Nations Studies with an emphasis on the eleven Woodland Tribes of Wisconsin
  • Knowledge of Woodland Tribe teachings and medicines
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English and preferably a Native language as well
  • Demonstrate a skillful use of technology applications and tools, including-but not limited to-Microsoft Suite, Google, Infinite Campus. and Data Warehouse
  • Ability to monitor data and generate reports
  • Possess strong leadership, collaborative, and problem-solving skills
  • Strong organizational and analytical skills
  • Skill at organizing resources and establishing priorities
  • Ability to develop effective working relationships with diverse individuals at all levels
  • Build trust to facilitate change, plan strategically, and fulfill the department mission
  • Exhibit ability to prioritize multiple tasks, balance responsibilities, and maintain a mission-oriented focus across settings
  • Consistently project a positive, team-oriented disposition
Responsibilities

  • Maintains a broad knowledge of all facets related to the teaching assignment as related to the subject and grade level of the students.
  • Uses research-proven practices to improve student achievement.
  • Utilizes resources that currently exist in First Nations Studies (FNS).
  • Incorporates the learning targets and the goals of the district as approved by the Board of School Directors.
  • Implements Board policies as necessary to improve the educational environment.
  • Creates a schedule of support to best serve the needs of each child, with consideration for school schedules.
  • Plans and organizes material for instruction.
  • Delivers and reinforces lessons as appropriate.
  • Delivers academic instruction in one-on-one/small group/in class settings.
  • Develops and maintains an environment conducive to learning that prepares students to meet and exceed Wisconsin academic standards, particularly in the areas of Math and English Language Arts.
  • Evaluates student progress on a continuous basis and provides feedback to students parents and appropriate staff members.
  • Maintains accurate and complete student records as required by state law and Board policies.
  • Addresses different learning modalities, including auditory, visual and kinesthetic.
  • Uses appropriate classroom management strategies and relates well to the student population.
  • Establishes FNS programming in schools in collaboration with school administration and classroom teachers.
  • Participates in parent-teacher conferences, as needed, to support the educational needs of the students.
  • Develops personalized learning plans, to include academic and social emotional elements, in collaboration with classroom teachers, parents/guardians, and any relevant support staff.
  • Refers students for additional services as needed.
  • Participates in FNS staff development programs, staff meetings, and program events.
  • Attends educational conventions and conferences to learn and discuss new methodologies for teaching.
  • Organizes and maintains effective communication between FNS program staff and school staff.
  • Maintains accurate work, school, and student schedules; efficiently complete paperwork.
  • Keeps records and prepare required reports relative to the FNS program operation and support of Native American students.
  • Produces, analyzes, and summarizes data.
  • Attends required staff and district meetings.
  • Participates in district-wide events such as family engagement of FNS students.
  • Performs and completes other duties as assigned.
Pay, Benefits, & Work Schedule

The salary range for this position starts at $52,827.70 and increases according to a set salary schedule which is based on years' of work experience as a fully licensed teacher/pupil services educator in a K-12 setting and education beyond a bachelor's degree.

Salary range: $52,827.70 - 99,937.66 (191-day teacher calendar)
