Serves as an expert working on high-complexity testing with proficiency in system/test validation and writing technical policies and procedures in the Cytogenetics Laboratory.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION

  • Bachelor's Degree in biology, medical technology or other physical or natural science field.
  • Experience

  • 5 years
  • Licenses and Certifications

  • (CLS) CLINICAL LAB SUPERVISOR Cytogenetics by ASCP.

JOB DUTIES
  • Job knowledge. Independently perform work of considerable complexities in order to achieve general results by interpretation of policy and using ingenuity, initiative and good judgment, and/or precedents to work problems having broader implications in Cytogenetics Laboratory. Keep abreast of new technical developments. Assist with implementation of new tests, equipment, programs and/or procedures in the assigned area(s) as needed. Technical Specialist learn new laboratory procedures and techniques and introduce them to their team. Accountable for on-going training and professional development of staff. Assist in developing performance standards. Performs advanced/specialized tests and other related laboratory techniques. Reruns work of others to confirm test results. Re-evaluates methodology and makes recommended changes to assist in test interpretation. Determines if further testing should be done on samples or if test should be repeated. Performs duties of technologist as necessitated by absence or peak workload.
  • Quality Orientation. Anticipate and identify issues related to results of analysis and be able to troubleshoot through lab testing issues. Assist in the creation and revision of laboratory policies and technical procedures. Ensure compliance with Clinical Laboratory Services Quality assurance requirements. Adherence to state, federal rules and regulations; ensures compliance with accrediting agencies and regulatory requirements. Maintains continuing laboratory quality improvement/education program at institutional, local and national/international level.
  • Instrumentation. Responsible as a primary source of information for maintaining current instrumentation. Troubleshoots instrumentation and equipment problems during the shift to ensure uninterrupted testing. Responsible for coordination of training in the methods and techniques of the appropriate specialty area with guidance of the manager/supervisor.
  • Productivity; Able to work, process and analyze methods utilized in the laboratory and ensures goal and expectations are achieved by the department.
  • Performs special projects such as evaluation of new reagents, procedures, tests, or other duties as assigned.
  • Achieves a minimum of 10 continuing education hours annually. Continuously seeks knowledge in and outside of functional area.
  • Actively participates in Performance Improvement Activities. Serves on committees and task forces. Orientates and instructs students and laboratory personnel in established clinical laboratory techniques, as required.
  • Ensures compliance with rules and regulations of regulatory accreditation agencies such as TJC, CAP, AABB and OSHA,
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
