Job Description

The Engineering and Applied Physics team at Vertex, San Diego, is looking to add a top-notch Mechanical Engineer & Machinist to our elite team of engineers and physicists. From advanced robotics and automation to microfluidics and cutting-edge microscopy, this unique in-house team develops a wide array of performance-focused technological solutions for the toughest challenges in drug discovery. Where commercial options don't exist, the team collaborates directly with Vertex scientists to create innovative solutions that enable ground-breaking science and discovery of life-saving medicines. The Mechanical Engineer & Machinist plays a unique dual role, helping us translate ideas into design, design into hardware, and hardware into meaningful technological impact.

This is an onsite position at our San Diego research site.

Key Responsibilities:

Mechanical Engineer (75%):

  • Conceptualize and design complex precision electro-mechanical and opto-mechanical systems
  • Collaborate with key stakeholders to define project requirements and timelines, and communicate status
  • Create clear and detailed design documentation for procurement and manufacture
  • Present designs for review at department, cross-functional, and senior leadership levels
  • Execute and support projects from inception, through design, review, build, test, and deployment
  • Deliver creative, innovative, effective solutions to challenging engineering problems

Machinist (25%):

  • Manufacture prototypes and iterative designs using multi axis CNC machines, water jet, and 3D printing
  • Modify off the shelf or custom designed parts for integration or testing
  • Identify and implement a new CAM software
  • Maintain machine shop and machine tools to ensure optimal performance

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Strong proficiency with CAD in a professional environment and a demonstrated ability to think, design, and communicate in 3D (SolidWorks knowledge/experience is a plus)
  • Design experience with application of pneumatic, fluidic, and motion control components: cylinders, valves, pumps, servo and stepper motors, controls, encoders, and drive components (ball screw, belts, linear and rotary guides, gears)
  • Working knowledge and demonstratable ability using CNC mills and CNC lathe or strong desire to learn
  • Experience with CAM software producing toolpaths for Multi axis mills or strong desire to learn
  • Experience in enclosure design: sheet metal, extruded frames, thermal management, safety
  • Able to prioritize and multi-task in a demanding, fast-paced environment
  • Strong time management, organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills
  • Able to transition between independent and group work quickly and seamlessly
  • A compulsive problem solver; detail oriented and self-driven

Education, Experience, and Requirements:

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering
  • 4+ years relevant Mechanical design experience
  • A passion for science and engineering, and a desire to tangibly apply that passion in the pursuit of transforming the lives of patients with serious diseases

Pay Range:

$99,600 - $149,300

Disclosure Statement:

The range provided is based on what we believe is a reasonable estimate for the base salary pay range for this job at the time of posting. This role is eligible for an annual bonus and annual equity awards. Some roles may also be eligible for overtime pay, in accordance with federal and state requirements. Actual base salary pay will be based on a number of factors, including skills, competencies, experience, and other job-related factors permitted by law.
