Job Summary

The Supervisor works under the supervision of the Dental Clinics director and is responsible for managing patient support staff, clinic operations and having thorough knowledge of the Dental Center in order to assist front/back office staff and faculty with questions and concerns for the FGP/AEGD/ENDO/PROS clinics. The incumbent will be responsible for implementing recommendations for poilicies, quality standards, and procedures to improve front and back office workflows. The incumbent will have direct oversight of administrative areas such as practice revenue management, facilities and safety procedures, registration, new patient coordination, scheduling, medical records maintenance and insurance authorizations.

The incumbent will determine the appropriate staff mix for the FGP/AEGD/ENDO/PROS clinics and develop processes to screen, interview, hire, train and maintain the competency of all clinic staff. Will ensure on going staff development. Manage and resolve human resource, employee and department safety and risk management issues.

The incumbent will be responsible for collaborating with dentistry providers in establishing, implementing and maintaining patient care and quality service standards to meet patients and internal client's expectations.

The incumbent will need to multitask and have exceptional customer service skills. The incumbent will work collaboratively with clinic staff, residents and faculty and perform other duties as assigned.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $87,900 - $187,700 (Annual Rate).

Department Description

The Department of Preventive and Restorative Dental Sciences (PRDS) is the largest department in the School of Dentistry. The Department is comprised of seven divisions including Behavioral Sciences and Community Dental Education, Biomaterials and Bioengineering, Clinical General Dentistry, Pre-Clinical Simulation, Endodontics, Oral Epidemiology and Dental Public Health: and Prosthodontics. Preclinical and clinical educational programs operate within the laboratories and clinics of the dental facilities on campus and through the school's satellite facilities, including the community clinic at 100 Buchanan Street. The Department offers accredited three-year residency programs in Prosthodontics and Endodontics an accredited one- or two-year residency in Dental Public Health and a two-year fellowship in Geriatrics. In addition, PROS offers postgraduate education in dental public health and epidemiology, in conjunction with the School of Public Health at UC Berkeley as part of the Dentist Scientist Award Program for dentists interested in combining specialty training with a PhD in epidemiology. The Division of Behavioral Sciences and Community Dental Education offers a one-year Masters of Science in Dental Hygiene as well as a one-year Advanced Education in General Dentistry residency program in conjunction with Lutheran Medical Center and several Federally Qualified Health Centers.

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in business, healthcare administration or related area and/or equivalent combination of experience/training.
  • 3- 5 year of supervisory experience
  • Expected to be front line problem solvers and work with direct reports on problem resolution
  • Use existing operational and technology infrastructure, standard works, resources and policies to remediate problems
  • When escalations are needed, enable data driven, validate escalations with direct manager
  • Align with Dental Center standard works and policies
  • Align and promote True North LEAN continuous quality improvement for managing clinical operations optimization
  • Align and promote PRIDE values, and collaborate professionally with reports, peers, managers, and faculty when needed on problem remediation
  • Demonstrated supervisory and organizational skills to effectively supervise staff and to manage the complex workflow and multiple priorities involved with clinic center administration.
  • Strong knowledge of practice operations, patient-scheduling systems, medical and insurance terminology, applicable information systems, patient service standards, and regulatory requirement and best practices.
  • Strong knowledge of human resources management policies, with the ability to train, monitor, evaluate, and document human resources issues and performance, and to participate in decision-making on human resources matters.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills, with the ability to quickly analyze problems, determine appropriate level of intervention, and develop and apply effective solutions.
  • Strong interpersonal skills for effective collaborations with all levels of management and staff, consultants, and outside agencies.
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills, with the ability to train and mentor subordinates, to convey complex administrative, clinical, and technical information in a clear and concise manner, and to prepare and present a variety of reports, documentation, analyses, and project proposals.
  • Strong knowledge of business software and specialized applications and data management systems used in clinic I center operations.
