Position Overview

This Clinical Lab Technical Specialist I (TSI) role will continue to refine the skills and training required for the Technical Specialist team. The TSI will be responsible for supporting the clinical laboratories in monitoring the day-to-day workflow and proactively resolving laboratory issues, identifying opportunities for continuous improvement, and assisting with implementing solutions with cross-functional support. These responsibilities are expected to be performed independently or under the oversight of Technical Specialist IIs and/or Technical Specialist leadership.

This role supports our Cologuard Testand is located at 1 Exact Lane in Madison, WI. This role is onsite working Monday-Friday, either 9am-5pm or 11am-7pm.

Essential Duties

Include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Participate in small process and continuous improvement projects to become familiar with equipment, change control, and effective inter-departmental communication.
  • Lead technical projects and larger, more complex cross-functional initiatives with periodic consultation from leadership. Keep team apprised of all project status updates.
  • Participate in updating programming projects using tools, such as Excel VBA, Python, and powerapps, and maintain software compliance with the Exact Sciences IT policy.
  • Troubleshoot existing Technical Specialist-owned applications and tools.
  • Communicate with multiple internal and external departments, including, but not limited to, lab support teams and Clinical Laboratory Leadership, on a routine basis.
  • Actively participate in meetings and represent the Technical Specialist team in project level meetings with oversight.
  • Manage time effectively between multiple competing priorities and follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Consistently execute assignments on time as dictated by project schedule and meet milestone dates for assigned projects and initiatives.
  • Communicate project delays to Technical Specialist leaders and provide possible solutions to get project back on track or assess the impact of the delay.
  • Balance and appropriately prioritize workload in alignment with team priorities.
  • Possess an advanced knowledge of lab practices and procedures including CAP and CLIA compliance and apply this knowledge and skillset to complete assignments.
  • Demonstrate ability to perform technical troubleshooting, both independently and under supervision.
  • Demonstrate ability to perform User Acceptance Testing (UAT) for lab information systems.
  • Solve a range of complex problems by analyzing possible solutions using knowledge and skillset, precedents and practices.
  • Clearly communicate status/progress of efforts to departments affected by problem and offer solutions based on company needs.
  • Possess a good understanding of GDP and technical writing. Lead updates to documentation and review documents written by team members following the document control process. May be expected to create new documentation given guidance from leadership.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills are necessary.
  • Good documentation skills and attention to detail.
  • Cooperate with coworkers within an organized team environment and work alone with minimal supervision.
  • Identify moderate to complex cost/time savings opportunities in fields of expertise.
  • Demonstrate experience in being an engaged and productive team member.
  • Operate as a self-motivated individual that can function both independently and under direct supervision as well as part of a team.
  • Adaptable to rapid changes in priorities.
  • Proven ability in Microsoft Office, specifically Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and working knowledge of technical writing.

  • Maintain regular and reliable attendance.

  • Ability to work on a mobile device, tablet, or in front of a computer screen the majority of the working day.
  • Ability to work on a computer and phone simultaneously.
  • Ability to use a telephone through a headset.
  • Ability to work seated for approximately 50% of a typical working day. Ability to work standing for approximately 50% of a typical working day.
  • Ability to lift up to 40 pounds for a minimal amount of a typical working day.
  • Ability to grasp with both hands; pinch with thumb and forefinger; turn with hand/arm; reach above shoulder height.
  • Ability to comply with any applicable personal protective equipment requirements.
  • Ability to use various types of laboratory equipment; including microscopes, microtomes, blades, strainers, and pipettes for extended periods of time.
  • May perform repetitious actions using lab tools.
  • Ability to use near vision to view samples at close range.
  • May be exposed to hazardous materials, tissue specimens, and instruments with moving parts, lasers, heating and freezing elements, and high-speed centrifugation.
  • Ability and means to travel occasionally between Exact Sciences locations as needed.
  • Ability to travel minimally away from work location, may include overnight/weekend travel.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Biology or relevant field; or Associate's degree with 2+ years of relevant industry experience; or HS/GED with 4+ years of relevant industry experience.
  • 2+ years of laboratory experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without accommodation.
  • Authorization to work in the United States without sponsorship

Salary Range:

$60,000.00 - $97,000.00

The annual base salary shown is for this position located in US - WI - Madison on a full-time basis. In addition, this position is bonus eligible, and is eligible to be considered for company stock at hire and on an annual basis.
