Instructional Specialist - Blood Collection/Phlebotomy
Newark, DE In 1954, the Blood Bank of Delmarva was established in the Delmarva region as a private, not for profit agency to collect, test, and distribute blood products. Today, the Blood Bank of Delmarva is a division of New York Blood Center and is among the nation's premium providers of blood products and services and an integral part of the Delmarva community's health care system. As of October, 2019, the Blood Bank of Delmarva employs approximately 169 full- and part-time employees. Our employees are committed to the Blood Center's mission of providing a safe and adequate blood for patients within our community. This role involves the design, implementation, and assessment of comprehensive training programs in phlebotomy, blood collection management, and customer service. The position also encompasses the development of both technical and non-technical training initiatives to enhance overall employee performance and service quality. Schedule: Monday-Thursday, 8am-4pm & Friday, 7am-3pm. Must be willing to adjust schedule accordingly during projects, implementations, and completion of competencies to meet operational needs.
Responsibilities
Primary Duties, Responsibilities or Activities Required by Job (In Order of Importance)
Develop, conduct, and evaluate training programs in phlebotomy, blood collection management, customer service, and other technical and non-technical areas.
- Collaborate with leaders and colleagues within the Enterprise Collections Center of Excellence (ECCOE) to ensure relevant course content facilitates ease of learning for Blood Center trainees.
- Support Blood Collections by coaching team members to improve task proficiency and providing remedial training to donor services staff as needed.
- Conduct training according to the course design and direction established by Blood Collections Learning.
- Ensure training and resource manuals and materials reflect the current SOPs and NYBC materials versions.
- Serve as a subject matter expert for training-related questions.
- Perform competency assessments of Donor Services staff and maintain training and competency assessment reports, records, and files in accordance with regulatory requirements.
- Collaborate with management to facilitate the integration of new technology and technological upgrades into the Blood Center's fixed site and mobile blood drive operations.
- Participate in planning and projects related to donor processing, donor management, and equipment with the Collections leadership team.
Other Secondary Functions
- Serves as a role model for professionalism in manner, appearance, and
- relationships with staff and donors.
- Communicates with management regarding retraining when staff are not compliant with SOPs or having difficulty performing job duties.
- Maintains confidentiality of personal information regarding donors and staff.
- Prepare various reports.
- Attends conferences, seminars, as required.
- Makes recommendations to improve business unit practices and processes.
- Any related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Required Minimum Education & Experience Education:
- Associate degree or above in a laboratory science-related field
Related Experience:
- Two years' experience in a training or leadership profession where staff training was included in the role - healthcare is optimal
- Any combination of education, training and experience equivalent to requirements listed above that has supplied the necessary knowledge, skills, and experience to perform the job's essential functions.
Required Licenses / Certification:
- Valid Driver's License and CPR Certification
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSA's):
- Knowledge:
- Knowledge of documentation practices and procedures.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suites
- Knowledge of phlebotomy and apheresis techniques, equipment, and supplies.
- Skill:
- Presentation and public speaking skills
- Attention to detail in all documentation and work processes.
