Summary -

The Welding Engineer provides a level of support from proposal through commissioning in both new product design and in existing product redesign. The Welding Engineer supports the efficient fabrication of hydroelectric components to be delivered on time with zero defects. The Welding Engineer leads the efforts to maintain conformance to the welding code with current qualified procedures and if required, develops, qualifies, and incorporates new welding procedures to the WPS Manual. The employee shall be safety oriented.

Responsibilities -



  • Provide welding and metallurgical support to Engineering, Quality Engineers, Process Planners, Field Operations, Subcontractors, and External Customers.
  • Provide production support relative to weld setups, heat treating, thermal cutting, and troubleshooting any welding or material related problems. Regularly interface with Shop Supervision, Welding Technician, and Quality Technicians.


* Develop, qualify, and write welding procedures in accordance with ASME IX or applicable standard to support production and field applications.



  • Review and approve subcontractor welding procedures to ASME and/or AWS codes
  • Develop, justify, implement, and support robotic/automated welding and thermal cutting processes.
  • Assist in inventory control of welding filler and consumables.
  • Specify appropriate testing and approve new welding filler material, welding, and preheat / post weld heat treat equipment.
  • Monitor weld deposition rates, routing and operator efficiency.


  • Incorporate problem solving skills, methods, and procedures to reduce cost of manufacturing (5S, Lean manufacturing, OPEX, etc.)


  • Interface with Welding Technician within the Welding Laboratory to support welding and material related issues.
  • Aid in Weld School operations to train and test Welders and Welding Operators in accordance with ASME IX or applicable standard. Maintain updated Welder and Welding operator qualification maintenance list.


  • Learn to search for documents, OEM drawings, engineered drawings, and resources.
  • Perform necessary calculations as required
  • Operates CAD equipment to complete work assignments
  • Prepare technical data such as standard customer reports and special reports when needed.
  • Keep supervisor advised of work status, workload, problems, and progress as related to work assignments.
  • Domestic and International travel as required.
  • Intermittent 2nd or 3rd shift may be required to support production



Qualifications -



  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Welding or Mechanical Engineering (or Engineering Technology) from four-year accredited college or university
  • Relevant manufacturing, engineering, or mechanical experience preferred but not required
  • Demonstrate effective collaboration teamwork skills
  • Ability to multi-task based on business need
  • Excellent time management skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)
  • Experience in welding ferrous and nonferrous materials with welding processes such as: SMAW, SAW, GMAW, FCAW, GTAW, ESW, and Stud welding
  • Understanding of nondestructive and destructive test methods and acceptance criteria
  • Knowledge in ASME BPVC and AWS D1.1
  • AWS CWI (American Welding Society Certified Weld Inspector) is a plus
  • Currently hold or willing to obtain a U.S. Passport

The employee is also required to occasionally travel to power plants and walk through units with a requirement to crawl, climb, and get into confined spaces.
