Location: This is a hybrid (virtual/onsite) position with required onsite days on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday and may be assigned to any Consumers Energy Service Center located throughout Michigan's lower Peninsula. The selected candidate must be within a commutable distance or willing to relocate (relocation package is available for those that qualify).


General Summary of Job Responsibilities

The Manager Portfolio is responsible for maximizing the sourcing value that is delivered for, and by ensuring alignment with, supported Business Unit leadership. Responsible for providing sourcing expertise as a member of, or advisor to, category managers and their teams and maintains a client focus on service delivery and an enterprise-wide view of the categories under management. Collaborates with senior internal stakeholders and Supply Chain personnel. Responsible for calibrating Supply Chain's efforts to changing client needs and requires the management and talent development of Supply Management staff, including Category Managers, Sourcing Specialists, Analysts, and Buyers. Utilize a well-developed perspective on the supply market for strategic categories from an enterprise-wide view to continually assess new opportunities to drive value for the company and understands how to execute the competitive process to minimize total cost of ownership (TCO), while delivering significant and lasting performance improvements

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Oversee and continuously improve the categories in portfolio to ensure business unit satisfaction and lowest total cost of ownership (TCO), while maintaining enterprise standards and supervising assigned category managers. Act as an expert of categories within portfolio and guide the overall category plan development and sourcing strategy execution for the portfolio.
  • Monitor market and financial analysis to understand key market forces and to determine and mitigate the business risk associated with enterprise-wide categories within the portfolio. Review the analysis of market and spend data to prioritize and target strategic sourcing initiatives within portfolio, taking a company-wide view of the assigned categories.
  • Analyze and develop company position on claims and disputes, and subsequently consult with senior management to resolve/negotiate claims and disputes associated with complex procurements.
  • Collaborate to develop negotiation strategies and company positions on high-dollar, high-value contracts, works with stakeholders to identify and incorporate appropriate levels of commercial protection, and conducts negotiations to ensure successful execution of strategies for optimal business outcomes. Distinguish between positions and interests to facilitate win-win results.
  • Foster competition to deliver improved performance at a reduced cost. Follow the prescribed methodology and teach the organization, describe the underlying reasons for each step during competitive bidding event execution. Coach category managers and customers on best practices.
  • Initiate "leading practices" within strategic procurement to achieve process excellence; stay abreast of industry innovations, and continuously improves the function and processes.
  • Maintain strong, positive, and influential relationships with key suppliers and internal stakeholders to assure long-term, cost-effective continuity of supply while delivering quality service to the company.
  • Manage and foster the talent development of any assigned category managers and sourcing specialists. Lead teams in developing category strategies and supports stakeholder communication across all levels of the company.
  • Other duties as assigned or may be necessary.
  • Support the use of spend/market data and analytics to develop thorough and effective sourcing strategies. Focus on assessing business requirements and matching plans to meet business needs.

Experience & Education

  • Bachelor's Degree in Applicable Supply Chain, Engineering, Business or Accounting/Finance field with4 years of relevant experience [OR]
  • Associate's Degree in Applicable Supply Chain, Engineering, Business or Accounting/Finance field with 6 years of relevant experience [OR]
  • High School Diploma or GED with 8 years relevant experience.
