Job DescriptionUnpaid Internship in Counseling Services, located in Waco Essential Functions

Employees will demonstrate TSTC Core values of Excellence, Accountability, Service, and Integrity with internal and external stakeholders, customers, students, and members of the community.

Individual and Group Counseling

This position will provide individual and group counseling to aid students in persisting through college. Types of duties include but are not limited to:

  • Provide inclusive services to all campuses assigned.
  • Provide individual counseling sessions in areas related to personal concerns, educational choices, interpersonal relationships, and social problems.
  • Provide group counseling sessions in areas related to educational choices, interpersonal relationships, and social problems.
  • Provide crisis intervention and respond to emergency situations on campus.
  • Provide support to all TSTC students, including those who attend classes outside typical working hours, such as nights and weekends.
  • This position may at times require availability to work beyond regular hours of operation and/or weekends.
  • Shall provide services as a substance abuse educator.
  • Guide students in the development of skills and strategies needed to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
Campus Community Interaction

This position will interact with the campus community to raise awareness of mental health. Types of duties include but are not limited to:

  • Potentially serve as an active member of the Campus Assessment Response and Evaluation (CARE) team.
  • Create, implement, and promote student workshops/seminars based on strategies and goals for individual mental health wellness designed to help students deal with critical issues and behavioral concerns.
  • Network/train faculty and staff on services and signs of mental health issues.
  • Team with administration, faculty, and staff, including across departments, in an ethical and collaborative spirit to increase persistence and retention.
  • Promote and publish events for maximum participation to the student body to increase retention, persistence, and completion.
  • Utilize data to inform event schedules and programs.
  • Evaluate and monitor program needs, identify unmet needs, and revise services as needed.
Foster Communication

This position will foster communication. Types of duties include but are not limited to:

  • Respond in a timely manner to all student inquiries received via email, text, and phone systems.
  • Work collaboratively with a variety of departments while providing services to support student success and retention.
  • Possess a general understanding of college policies, procedures, requirements, and effectively communicate them to students.
Other Duties as Assigned

Additional responsibilities may be assigned as needed.

Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills

Required:

  • Graduate student in a Master's degree program in a counseling-related field.
  • Knowledge of modern counseling practices and methods.
  • Ability to listen and understand the views and concerns of others and help them develop insight into themselves and their relationships.
  • Knowledge of and adherence to existing professional ethical standards.
  • Skills in judgment and decision-making, problem-solving.
  • Ability to multitask.
  • Abilities in problem identification, reasoning, and developing original ideas to solve problems.
  • Ability to relate to individuals and groups of students using communication, counseling, and problem-solving skills.
  • Skill in working independently and following through on assignments with minimal direction.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a service environment that is subject to frequent interruptions and skill in setting priorities
  • Able to effectively, professionally, and tactfully interact and communicate, both orally and in writing, with students, faculty, staff, and visitors.
  • Skill in accurate record-keeping with strict attention to detail. Skill in organizing tasks, documents, and materials with efficiency and accuracy.
