About the unit The Lab Central department is the pre analytical area of the Core Regional Laboratory at Corewell Health West. Lab Path Assist are responsible for the intake of all inpatient and outpatient specimens. About the hospital Corewell Health Regional Laboratory serves many types of patients and providers. The lab is located on the Butterworth campus and serves inpatients from Butterworth (including Level 1 Trauma Center), Meijer Heart Center, and Helen DeVos Children's Hospital. It also serves many outpatient draw sites and offices, along with medical examiner cases across several counties in Michigan. Scope of work Maintains accurate specimen stability at all times. Receives all specimen to maintain a tracking of each specimen. Utilizes a centrifuge to separate blood/urine samples and pour over in correct container type for processing. Delivers specimens to the correct testing area. Assist in loading specimens on to analyzers for testing. Provides exceptional experience to all customers via inbound and outbound phone calls, chats and emails. Ensure that services are provided in accordance with state and federal regulation, accreditation and compliance requirement, and organizational policy. Essential Functions Greets and communicates in a manner consistent with caring and respect and dealing with confidentiality. Answers telephone, takes messages, welcomes visitors and provides / relays information in a manner consistent with hospitality standards. Serves as a resource to patients, lab clients, and SH team members regarding specimen requirements and processing. Processes orders, performs computer order entry and other related activities per standard, which may include registering clients, contacting providers for issue resolution, entering charges for services, performing and resulting tests. May utilize standard venipuncture techniques to collect appropriate blood specimens by adhering to correct collection and transport protocol including positive patient identification May receive incoming specimens, checks for proper labeling and routes to appropriate location. Follows all Spectrum Health procedures and policies. May be required to serve at multiple SH locations during a given shift (Site dependent) Follow all lab safety procedures to minimize risk to self and others; reports gaps and escalates as necessary Committed to the continuous improvement of the patient experience which includes patient safety, quality of care and excellent service. Qualifications Required High School Diploma or equivalent and graduate of a Phlebotomy training program (based on specific Spectrum Health entity and department as appropriate) preferred.
