Assistant Head Lifeguard - Seasonal

Hourly Range: $19.93 - $22.25

Job Summary -

Assist in day-to-day supervision of an aquatic facility; oversee lifeguards and park workers to ensure a safe and clean swim environment; support in the training of lifeguards in all aspects of safety according to the lifesaving program; perform rescues, administer first aid/emergency care; manage the building and grounds maintenance, general maintenance of the pool, equipment, building/grounds; perform administrative duties and assist with programming as needed.

Job Responsibilities




  • Lifeguarding - Monitor patrons while they are engaging activities in the pool or beach; perform rescues/assistance to patrons; administer first aid and emergency medical care; identify potential cause of rescues and develop response plans; enforce safety rules.


  • Training - Assist with training lifeguards in proper procedures for lifeguarding, emergency response, pool operation, teaching swim lessons, rule enforcement; train and monitor staff in First Responder and CPR skills; maintain necessary training and certifications to meet requirements.


  • Administration - Support the Head Lifeguard by completing paperwork as needed including first aid, rescue, emergency, injury, discipline and pool operation reports; complete ratings, schedules, payroll, inventory, swim lesson plans, daily log, and training documentation.


  • Personnel Management - Ensure that lifeguards perform in accordance with established safety and training procedures; train new lifeguards and parkworkers to job duties and responsibilities; ensure that aquatic programs are occurring as planned; performs disciplinary action as needed.


  • Pool and Facility Operations - Responsible for water quality testing, pool chemical ordering and adjustments; operate chemical feeders, mechanical systems and water activities; clean and maintain the pool; maintain all lifeguard equipment and local health code compliance.


  • Building and Grounds Maintenance - Responsible for general maintenance and cleanliness of the facility including the pool, deck, building, bathrooms, cutting/ trimming of grass, trash pickup, shoveling/snow blowing, general maintenance, and report work orders.


  • Special Assignments and Projects - Participate on special project teams; community outreach efforts; program implementation; staff recruitment; and other duties as assigned.



Required Education, Licenses/Certifications and Experience -




  • Current resident of WI
  • At least 18 years of age during application
  • At least 2 years of experience as Lifeguard
  • Ability to carry and lift up to 100 lbs. and push, pull 50 lbs



Licenses - Required



  • Milwaukee County EMS-First Responder Certification or approved equivalent
  • AHA BLS Heartsaver CPR certification during application or approved equivalent
  • Milwaukee County Lifeguard Certification or approved equivalent


Additional Comments -



  • Ability to swim and pass the DPRC civil service physical test required- including a timed 100-meter swim, water rescues-carries and breaks and retrieval of a submerged object
  • Ability to recognize an emergency situation and act accordingly
  • Excellent customer service and problem-solving skills
  • Good leadership skills
  • Must be 18 years of age or older



NOTE: This original application is open to permanent residents of the state of Wisconsin at the time of application. In accordance with Section 11, Rule 3 of the Civil Service Rules a non-competitive examination will be held for this position. The non-competitive examination will consist of criteria deemed appropriate by the Director of Human Resources.
