Primary Purpose of Department
The Office of University Development's primary purpose is to build philanthropic relationships that engage alumni, donors, students, faculty and the community in supporting the University's mission. These efforts include working closely with the donors, governing boards, alumni, friends, community members, foundations and corporations to increase private giving to the University. The Office of University Development is within the division of University Advancement.
Primary Purpose of Position
Reporting to the Executive Director of Development, the Director of Development plays a vital role in the University's fundraising efforts by supporting the overall development strategy and cultivating donor relationships. In conjunction with the Advancement team, the Director of Development will build a pipeline of prospective donors focused on leadership and major gift levels. The Director of Development will collaborate closely with advancement staff, volunteers, and College/Unit leadership in identifying, qualifying, and developing relationships with alumni, corporate partners, and friends to secure private philanthropic support. The Director of Development will be responsible for developing and executing a major gift fundraising strategy to support the College/Unit's strategic plan and in alignment with the University's strategic fundraising plans.
Summary of Position Responsibilities
The Director of Development works in collaboration with the Dean of a College/Unit and maintains a personal portfolio of 125 - 150 individuals capable of making commitments of $35K+. The Director of Development employs a strategic moves management program to ensure movement along with development donor continuum pipeline.

Responsibilities include:

  • Lead fundraising efforts for a College/Unit and various University-wide initiatives, to identify, qualify, cultivate, solicit, and steward philanthropic gifts of $35,000+.
  • Complete 140+ strategic donor and prospect meetings annually.
  • Collaborate with the Dean of a College/Unit to maximize their effectiveness in fundraising for approved initiatives.
  • Develop innovative stewardship strategies to thank and recognize major donors.
  • Provide leadership and mentorship to junior members of the Major Gifts team.
  • Consistently meet individual metrics and fundraising goals.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records in the advancement database, tracking donor interactions, gifts, and engagement activities.
  • Promote the University's priorities and image to constituents.
  • Maintain a current body of knowledge about the University's development and campus-wide priorities.
  • Collaborate with other teams within University Advancement, particularly Gift Planning, Annual Giving, Prospect Strategy & Research, Donor Relations, Alumni Affairs, and University Communications.
  • Ensure compliance with fundraising policies, goals, and procedures.


Other Responsibilities:

  • Perform other duties as required or assigned.
  • Attend a variety of events throughout the year.
  • Regular local travel and some regional/out-of-state travel are required for this position.

Minimum Education/Experience
  • Bachelor's degree with 5+ years of professional experience related to fundraising, nonprofit management, higher education, sales, marketing, development, business administration, project management, or relationship management.
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Graduate degree and/or CFRE preferred.
  • Proven track record of securing five and six figure philanthropic gifts.
  • Proven track record of working with volunteers.
  • Familiarity securing major and planned gifts.
  • Team-oriented, self-starter who can proactively work and manage complex tasks.
  • Proficiency in using fundraising databases and software.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Passion for the mission of the University and the ability to articulate its impact effectively.
