Executive Director - Georgetown Center for the Constitution

Georgetown University comprises two unique campuses in the nation's capital. With the Hilltop Campus located in the heart of the historic Georgetown neighborhood, and the Capitol Campus, just minutes from the U.S. Capitol and U.S. Supreme Court, Georgetown University offers rigorous academic programs, a global perspective, and unparalleled opportunities to engage with Washington, D.C. Our community is a close-knit group of remarkable individuals driven by intellectual inquiry, a commitment to social justice, and a shared dedication to making a difference in the world.

Requirements

The Georgetown Center for the Constitution (GCC), founded in 2012, offers a variety of programs on constitutional law and theory at Georgetown Law, placing special emphasis on how best to remain faithful to the Constitution's text. Led by Professors Randy Barnett and Stephanie Barclay, the Center sponsors lectures, faculty colloquia, conferences, visiting scholars, post-graduate fellowships, and student fellows. All of its activities are designed to engage scholars, students, and even Supreme Court justices in conversations about how to interpret and apply the document that sits under glass less than ten blocks away from Georgetown Law.

The Executive Director (ED) will be responsible for promoting the Center's mission, scholarship, and advocacy. In consultation with the Center's Faculty Director, the ED will design and manage center initiatives, programs, and events, and achieve programmatic success while working with multiple stakeholders. Measures of this success would include a heightened profile in the academic, media, legal, and policymaking communities, which would in turn provide students the opportunity to build new skills and connections and afford faculty the opportunity to expand their influence. The ideal candidate will have significant experience in and strong knowledge of the field of constitutional law, constitutional theory, and originalism, as well as teaching experience, administrative experience, fundraising experience, media experience, and strong leadership skills. Additional duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Assist the Faculty Director in developing new fundraising initiatives for the Center, including developing programming to involve the more than 100 alums of the Center's Originalism Summer Seminar that will encourage their financial support of the Center.
  • Initiate and manage key relationships with the Center's Faculty Scholars, supporting faculty priorities and student interests.
  • Strengthen and promote the Center's ongoing projects (including the Originalism Constitution website and MOOCs), ensuring that internal and external partnerships are aligned, consistent, and effective.
  • Work closely with the Faculty Directors and Program Manager to ensure support for faculty, fellows, and students, coordinating outreach to alumni of the Center's programming and fellowships.
  • Strengthen the Center's relationships with constituents, its position as a thought leader on constitutional theory and interpretation, and its contributions to originalism scholarship.

Work Interactions

The ED will supervise programming and Research Assistants and will have significant interaction with Staff, Students, and Faculty across the Law Center. This position will collaborate with academic and administrative teams along with other Centers and Institutes. The incumbent will manage and collaborate with the Center's Program Manager. Interactions will also include external parties and partners, including, but not limited to, scholars at other academic institutions and think tanks, elected and appointed government officials and their staffs, media, alumni, and supporters/donors.

Requirements and Qualifications
  • J.D. degree
  • At least 10 years of experience related to originalism or constitutional law, which is the Center's primary focus
  • A strong record of publication and public speaking, experience teaching JD students, preparing grants and seeking new funding opportunities, improving media outreach and leveraging media platforms, developing coalitions and managing complex events
  • Must have management experience, including demonstrated leadership ability, initiative, and the ability to supervise the legal research of others
  • Familiarity with and previous involvement with the Center's activities is strongly preferred
