Summary

The Academic Advisor is primarily responsible for delivering student-centered academic advising while upholding NACADA best practices. This role focuses on providing guidance and mentorship to students, emphasizing holistic support. The Advisor collaborates with students, utilizing proactive strategies to enhance their academic journey and foster success.


Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Deliver comprehensive academic advising services to students, employing a holistic approach aligned with NACADA standards.
  • Manage a caseload of assigned students from assigned majors.
  • Participate in New Student Orientation activities, including programming, registration, and meet and greets.
  • Supervise student mentors who will provide additional support to the advisor's assigned caseload of students.
  • Assist students in major exploration, academic planning assessments, and the development of educational plans to support their success.
  • Work with various software tools, including Student Planning, Navigate, Canvas, and Colleague, etc., and ensures appropriate and timely documentation of student interactions.
  • Provide proactive follow up and outreach with students throughout the school year.
  • Foster relationships with assigned students and offer individualized support plans focused on academic success.
  • Participate and plan departmental programs supporting student development and retention initiatives, including workshops and presentations.
  • Collaborate with faculty and staff to foster student success and serve on university committees as required.
  • Attend and participate in on-going advisor training to stay current on advising trends within the field of advising.
  • Serve on the Advising Council, which serves as a think tank of academic advisors and advising leadership.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required; master's degree preferred in Education, Counseling, Social Work, or related field.
  • 1-3 years of academic advising experience at the college level or related field, with additional experience in academic coaching preferred.
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills are essential. Familiarity with NACADA core competencies, CAS standards for advising, or student development theory is helpful.
  • Experience managing academic support programs is advantageous.
