This is a six (6) month 100% Contract position. This appointment may be extended or converted to career status based on the needs and funding of the department.

DESCRIPTION

The Marine Physical Laboratory Division at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego is seeking a Research Data Analyst 3. The incumbent in this position uses skills as a seasoned, experienced research professional with a full understanding of in-depth statistical analyses and / or research software programming techniques; demonstrates good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions.

Position is responsible for running high resolution numerical simulations of environmental fluid dynamics, and analyze the output of those data from the perspective of physical oceanography. Incumbent will have working skills in High Performance Computing (HPC) simulations using MITgcm (MIT General Circulation Model) and other numerical models. Incumbent will display a high degree of proficiency in the analysis of complex data sets and the development of graphics and schematics to communicate the outcome of the analysis. Studies the onset of instabilities in internal wave shoaling on gentle slopes.

The research data analyst 3 will have demonstrated skills in the documentation and communication of complex analysis and numerical modelling, in the form of contribution to peer-reviewed publications and grant proposals. Participates in multi-investigator projects with multiple stakeholders. Works directly with observational scientists to plan forthcoming field programs and contributes to grant proposal preparation and writing, reporting, and other administrative tasks.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in Oceanography, Coastal Engineering, Computational Fluid Dynamics or related field is required.

  • Expertise in High Performance Computing and high resolution hydrodynamical modeling

  • Thorough knowledge of research function.

  • Thorough skills associated with statistical analysis and systems programming. Experience with HPC simulations using MITgcm and other numerical models.

  • Thorough skills in analysis and consultation.

  • Skills to communicate complex information in a clear and concise manner both verbally and in writing.

  • Skills in project management.

  • Research skills at a level to evaluate alternate solutions and develop recommendations.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS
  • This is a 6 month contract position.

  • Offer of employment is contingent upon candidate clearing the background check process.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $85,400 - $156,800 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $40.90 - $75.10

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
