Summary The Building Performance Consultant will play an important role in the support and implementation of new construction energy efficiency programs. This will include consulting on individual new construction projects to support the programs. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Responsibilities will include gathering the information needed to analyze energy saving options using energy models; coordinating project work deadlines and meetings; managing expectations of design teams and program managers; and providing consultation and presenting work to project teams including owners, architects, and engineers. This role may offer opportunities for participating in professional communities with opportunities for public speaking and presentations. The BP Consultant level integrates basic technical analysis / modeling into the role and includes projects of greater complexity than the advisor role.
- Document influence factors, decision points, and project activity / progress in project tracking tools.
- Customize reports based on customer interests / needs such as additional charts / tables related to project specific drivers.
- Facilitate post-meeting debrief and record outcome in project management software.
- Propose alternates on each project where possible ; Ability to move teams to higher savings/ lower carbon options.
- Tie results meeting discussions with insight gathered during Intro Call.
- Demonstrate ability to recognize connections between drivers and proposed systems / measures / strategies, and discuss them with project teams.
- Meet program-specific meeting objectives.
- Efficiency programs; ability to model most projects with minimal support.
- Create NEO models (S-PRM models) based on drawings, planning documents, narratives, team discussion.
- Provide modeling and modeling support on simplified energy analysis projects.
- Assess appropriate measures and develop recommendations based on project-specific factors.
- Understand and explain model setup and applicability of energy and carbon reduction measures to specific projects, and able to tailor / filter measure lists based on project, customer, and client needs.
- Listen/watch for new technology opportunities and forward to internal new technologies team for further investigation.
- Ability to locate key sections of drawings and specs and identify project-specific data for our analyses (all relevant disciplines).
- Ability to review models and technical sections of reports, and identify and resolve model errors/ issues.
- Achieve weekly and annual personal productivity goals based on company and program specific factors.
- Ability to communicate effectively with internal and external team members.
- Explain program info and analysis results to varied audience types (owners, architects, engineers, contractors, utility account managers, etc) adapting to their level of understanding; Avoids use of internal or nonstandard jargon in discussions with external teams.
- Respond quickly and with clarity to internal and external project partners.
- Recognize and carry-out appropriate consulting paths based on project and team-specific factors, and shift paths as needed.
- Demonstrate responsiveness to customers in meetings and in non-meeting communication; Ability to "read the room" during meetings and adapt discussion and talking points to reflect an understanding of customer's needs and focused.
- Facilitate meetings solo on most projects.
- Plan and prepare in advance for discussions and meetings to achieve the outcomes desired by customers, clients, and Willdan.
- Present and discuss project information in a manner consistent with Willdan's goals and brand.
- Guide customers, architects, and engineers through a well-defined energy consulting process.
- Identify stuck projects and seek help for them through open and honest communication.
- Participates in networking and/or seek new project opportunities during consulting meetings.
- Contact design professionals to gain information needed to construct energy models.
- Attend ASHRAE, AIA, and other technical or professional organization meeting/events.
Job Requirements / Qualifications:
- Bachelors or Masters Degree in Architecture, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Construction Management, Building Science or closely related field.
- 2 to 7 years relevant work experience Knowledge of building design, construction processes, and/or building operation.
- Knowledge of building systems and factors affecting building performance.
- Awareness of energy modeling tools and programs such as EnergyPro, DOE2, EnergyPlus, DesignBuilder, eQuest, or others.
- Demonstrated ability to accurately interpret complex information, make strategic recommendations to guide decision-making by identifying anticipated benefits, consequences and impacts of alternative system options.
- Familiarity with tools such as MS Excel for data analysis, manipulation, and reporting.
- Knowledge of energy codes and standards (such as Title 24, ASHRAE 55, 62.1, 90.1, 189.1).
- Knowledge of utility sponsored energy efficiency programs, specifically those that target the design of new buildings.
- Any of the following industry related certifications:
- Certified Energy Manager (CEM)
- Building Energy Modeling Professional (BEMP)
- LEED Accredited Professional
- Building Energy Assessment Professional (BEAP)
- Commissioning Authority (CxA)
- Licensure in related field (Professional Engineer or Registered Architect)
- Ability to work effectively in a fast paced, evolving, entrepreneurial work environment.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office suite.
- Has a working knowledge of the content, structure, and purpose of building energy codes / market targets and can interpret/apply their content to energy and carbon analyses (including local/state energy codes, Energy Star scores, benchmarks, 179d, etc).; ability to apply understanding to support project questions and challenges.
- Proficient understanding of energy modeling tools (NEO, DOE2, Energy Plus, DesignBuilder, eQuest, etc.); ability to apply understanding to handle issues and problems with minimal support.
- Proficient understanding of simplified modeling (S-PRM) methodology and demonstrated ability to apply to energy and carbon analyses within Utility Energy Efficiency programs; ability to model most projects with minimal support.
