Welding Engineer

Farr West, UT

Job Summary:

Prepares, qualifies and maintains welding procedures, procedure qualification records and welder performance qualifications. Monitors welding to assure proper and efficient operation.

Essential Functions:

  • Review contract requirements and prepare any necessary welding procedure specifications, procedure qualification records and welder performance qualification records which may require customer approval
  • Coordinate qualification and consumable testing with internal and/or external sources as required
  • Maintain welder continuity records
  • Train welding personnel as required for the proper execution of procedures/qualifications
  • Monitor welding operations to assure proper application of welding procedures and performance qualifications
  • Collaborate with cross functional teams
  • Assist in troubleshooting welding problems
  • Stay abreast with current technology, equipment and welding filler materials and implement improvements accordingly
  • Create procedures for post weld heat treatments and review time/temperature charts to ensure listed requirements were met
  • Write technical justifications and responses to address customer questions and/or concerns

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to navigate and utilize standard office software efficiently.
  • Should possess practical knowledge of fabrication techniques and equipment.
  • Should be familiar with inspection and NDE processes.
  • Must have working knowledge of the arc welding processes and weld quality.
  • Must have working knowledge of fabrication codes and standards including ASME, AWS & NAVSEA/MIL-STD.
  • Must demonstrate competency in producing technical documentation.
  • Must be able to work well in a team environment.
  • Knowledge in automated welding is a plus.
  • Proficiency in 3D modeling software (i.e. Solidworks) is a plus.

Minimum Requirements:

Four-year welding engineering/welding engineering technology degree or equivalent technical field preferred. Welding engineering work experience may be considered in lieu of a degree. Plus, four years of welding engineering related experience in a fabrication environment working with codes, standards and specifications, preparing procedures and other quality related documents such as inspection & NDE.

Essential Mental Functions:

Must be proactive and be able to evaluate quality conditions. Must be able to work diplomatically with employees and customers.

Essential Physical Functions:

Must be able to work in a fabrication and machine shop environment and be able to climb on parts and machinery to perform inspections and evaluate their conditions.

Safety Requirements:

  • Must not pose a direct threat or significant risk of substantial harm to the safety or health of himself/herself or others
  • Must be committed to a high standard of safety and be willing and able to comply with all safety laws and all the employer's safety policies and rules and must be willing to report safety violations and potential safety violations to appropriate supervisory or management personnel.

Equipment Used (But not limited to):

Personal Computer, visual weld inspection equipment, mechanical weld testing equipment, welding equipment.

Availability:

  • Must maintain regular and acceptable attendance at such level as is determined in the employer's sole discretion.
  • Must be available and willing to work overtime as the employer determines is necessary or desirable to meet its business needs.

Travel:

Must be available and willing to travel as the employer determines is necessary or desirable to meet its business needs.

Working Conditions:

Primarily in office but also involves working in typical fabrication/machine shop surroundings.
