Overview

We are seeking an experienced and strategic AVP of Surety Underwriting to lead our group in the Pacific Northwest (preferably Washington or Oregon). In this key leadership role, you will oversee a team of underwriters focused on contract surety business. You will be responsible for managing underwriting operations, mentoring staff, driving regional growth, and ensuring profitable performance in alignment with corporate goals. This leader will maintain a solid understanding of AmTrust's mission, vision, and values and uphold the standards of the AmTrust organization.



Responsibilities

    Lead, coach, and develop a team of contract surety underwriters, fostering a high-performance culture.
  • Manage regional underwriting results, including growth, profitability, and loss ratio targets.
  • Establish and maintain strong agency and broker relationships to drive new business and retain key accounts.
  • Collaborate with senior leadership on regional strategy, market expansion, and competitive positioning.
  • Monitor industry trends and economic factors to proactively manage risk and identify growth opportunities.
  • Ensure compliance with internal underwriting standards, regulatory requirements, and audit controls.
  • Participate in the recruitment, training, and performance evaluation of underwriting staff.


Qualifications

  • Minimum of 7-10 years of experience in surety underwriting, with at least 3 years in a leadership or team management capacity.
  • Deep knowledge of contract surety underwriting principles, financial statement analysis, and risk evaluation.
  • Strong existing broker and agency relationships within the market preferred.
  • Proven ability to lead, mentor, and develop high-performing underwriting teams.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and analytical skills.
  • Willingness to travel within the region as needed.
