Job Summary Employment Duration: 3 months
The Medical Assistant III plays a critical role in supporting both clinical and administrative functions at the UCSF Berkeley Outpatient Center. Under the supervision of the Nurse Manager and in collaboration with the clinical team, this role ensures high-quality patient care and flow through all stages of a clinic visit.
The Medical Assistant III manages tasks from check-in to check-out, performs clinical procedures, supports patient scheduling, handles referrals, and assists in emergencies-all while maintaining excellent customer service and operating within an advanced Electronic Health Record (EHR) system.
Key Responsibilities:
Patient Flow & Rooming: Efficiently room patients and manage clinic flow by rotating between clinical and administrative duties as needed. Clinical Support: Obtain vital signs, EKGs, patient weights, and assist with exams and procedures. Perform medication reconciliation and specimen collection. Patient Communication & Scheduling: Schedule appointments using CADENCE, triage urgent phone calls, and ensure complete patient registration. Referral & Lab Coordination: Gather patient histories, prepare referral documentation, assist providers with lab forms, and follow up on outstanding tasks. Environment & Safety: Maintain clean and stocked exam rooms, ensure compliance with infection control standards, and follow safety protocols. Cross-functional Support: Support specialty clinics by securing authorizations, confirming appointments, and performing pre-clinic prep. Administrative Functions: Manage emails, messages, and medication requests through EHR systems and coordinate follow-ups with providers.

Please note: An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.
For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

Department Description UCSF's Temporary Employment Program (TEP) recruits and hires temporary employees for immediate clerical and technical support services to UCSF Departments and various off-campus locations. UCSF departments deploy temporary employees to work on special projects, fill in for regular employees who are on vacation or leave, or to temporarily fill a vacant position during recruitment. Frequently temporary employees become successful candidates for career and limited appointment positions.
Required Qualifications
- Completion of a Medical Assistant program or equivalent training/experience
- Minimum 6 months of Medical Assisting experience
- Phlebotomy (CPT-1) certification*
- (If not certified, hire as Hospital Assistant II with promotion upon certification)
- BLS certification
- Flexibility to work across different specialties
- Strong computer and EHR skills
- Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication
- Ability to multitask and prioritize in a clinical setting
Preferred Qualifications
- Bilingual language skills
License/Certification
- American Heart Association BLS - CPR Certified
- Medical Assistant Certification
