Overview

The Director of Engineering will report to and support the Chief Technology Officer in the advancement of FTI's technology strategy with a focus on the organization and execution strategy across the portfolio and the enterprise. This role will be responsible for leading the execution of FTI's technology initiatives; this includes overseeing all engineering activity, establishing IR&D budgets for efforts, and determining and driving schedules. This role will also be responsible for coordinating and managing both internal and external customers that are dependent on the technical services and solutions. Additionally, the Director of Engineering will be responsible for driving excellence with the organization which is critical in accelerating our schedules and maximizing the value of deliverables. The right candidate will have a mixture of both technical and business experience as they will need to understand not only the technical elements of the strategy but also how it aligns to the goal of driving enterprise value.



Responsibilities

    Directs FTI's research and development policies and initiatives, such as uniform software development life cycle practices.
  • Responsible for technology delivery, R&D execution, and communication of status to all stakeholders and assuring that schedules, costs, and performance expectations are being satisfied.
  • Supports Chief Technology Officer and works closely with the Director of Product & Platform to set R&D objectives and approve R&D projects based on strategic and technical value as well as managing the adherence to the budget provided.
  • Leads cross functional collaboration throughout the organization to solicit feedback from key stakeholders and to identify business and technical trends that lead to driving growth and value.
  • Works closely with the CTO and Director of Product & Platform in continually assessing technology and IP portfolio and identifying opportunities for new or enhanced offerings aligning with the business and technology strategy.
  • Responsible for successful staffing of engineering team and with managing allocations to support matrix organization
  • Responsible for managing, sourcing, and tasking contracted resources


Education/Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related technical field
  • 10+ years' experience leading in an executive level position within technology-driven environment, with hands-on engineering experience.
  • Must be a US Citizen with the ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret Clearance or above.
  • Knowledge of U.S. government contracting, compliance and regulatory compliance.

Leadership | Matrixed Organizations

  • Prior experience leading (building would be a ++) a multi-disciplinary engineering organization (Ex. // software, data, cyber, DevOps, systems) within a matrixed or cross-functional structure
  • Demonstrated success in resource alignment, workload allocation balancing, and performance management across indirect reporting lines
  • Ability to work collaboratively with program managers, product owners, and business leaders to balance technical priorities and delivery schedules

Organizational & Operational Experience

  • Experience managing (or standing up) complex technical organizations or portfolios, ideally with varied maturity levels or multiple technical domains (DoD is optimal)
  • Skilled in developing and scaling engineering processes, organizational best practices, and technical governance models (CMMI experience would be great)
  • Familiarity with managing budgets, staffing plans, and operational strategy for technical teams

Technical Expertise

  • Proven experience in software development and/or systems engineering across the full lifecycle (design, implementation, integration, testing, and sustainment)
  • Demonstrated ability to work across complex technology stacks, architectures, and environments (Ex. // distributed systems, secure systems, DevSecOps)
  • Ability to evaluate technical tradeoffs and guide teams through system-level design decisions
  • Familiarity with agile software development methodologies and modern engineering toolchains (Ex. // CI/CD, cloud-native, containerization)

Communication & Stakeholder Management

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, especially in translating technical complexity into business or executive-level insights
  • Ability to influence up, down, and across the organization, including briefing senior stakeholders and aligning cross-functional teams

Additional Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in the Department of Defense or Intelligence Community.
  • Exposure to strategic planning, roadmapping, or technical investment decision-making (Ex: Internal Research & Development)
