Job Purpose
Serves as campus Electrical System Specialist to address electrical maintenance, repair, and preventive maintenance on all Generators and components associated with the generators and emergency panels controlled by the college. Responsible for monitoring system operations, identifying problems or malfunctions in equipment and initiating corrective action, appropriate maintenance and repair; and provides expert advice to other staff that may be working with these issues. Provide support to contractors/engineers during any power outages. Preventive maintenance of all electrical systems throughout the campus, in addition to, electrical equipment within various buildings, dormitories, historic homes, office buildings, and large facilities.
Minimum Requirements
This skilled lead electrician must have a two-year technical degree and ten years of professional trade experience in electrical construction, troubleshooting, diagnostics, maintenance and repair. Must have extensive and superior knowledge of standard practices, methodology, new technology, techniques and requirements of the electrical trade. Must have a valid SC driver's license as the employee will be required to drive state vehicles to transport equipment and/or personnel when needed. Must be able to complete records and paperwork associated with repairs/installations. Candidates with an equivalent combination of experience and/or education are encouraged to apply.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Must have superior electrical ability and skills to locate and correct emergency and general electrical problems. Must be able to follow complex oral and written instructions. Must have thorough and complete knowledge of all OSHA required safety practices relative to electrical work. Must have expert knowledge of and skill in using tools, equipment, materials and supplies used in building maintenance and construction that are applicable to the electrical trade. Must be able to comprehend blueprints, plans, building codes and electrical specifications. Must have the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with high-ranking college officials, department heads, general workforce, engineers, contractors and other persons directly involved with projects. Must be able to articulate and have good communication skills.
Must have strong computer skills and be proficient in using e-mail and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.). Experience in utilizing on-line work order systems is a plus. Skill with electronic devices such as iPhone and iPad is preferred. Must be able to follow oral & written instructions. All employees at the College are expected to perform their jobs in a safe manner in accordance with best safety practices as prescribed by their department, the Office of Environmental Health and Safety, and the Occupational
Health and Safety Administration training as provided by Facilities Management at the College of Charleston. Must have knowledge regarding NFPA 70 National Electrical Code and NFPA 70E Electrical Safety to include proper ARC flash PPE.
Additional Comments Regarding Position
Must be able to perform duties as described and work both indoors and outdoors in all types of weather. Must be able to work in close quarters, climb ladders/stairs, enter/exit hatches, and work on rooftops. Must be able to work in areas of excessive heat/cold and lift or move furniture, objects, heavy components, and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds. Overtime and call back work is required after normal working hours and on weekends as needed. May be required to be on campus prior to and immediately following all emergencies such as hurricanes, floods, snow/ice storms, etc.

1. Assists, guides, & provides on the job training to College electrical technicians with technical problems and questions when resolving technical/mechanical issues on campus electrical equipment throughout the college campus. Indirectly supervises, mentors, and provides expert advice to other internal and external electrical technicians. Proactively stays current & acquires skill & knowledge to maintain & repair all electrical equipment that evolves & advances rapidly as new technological advances are available. On site for all power outages and installation of new electrical equipment factory start-ups.
Responds to assigned work orders with a sense of urgency and ensures appropriate and timely resolution. Operates mobile electronic device to access, update, and complete work orders to include all appropriate information to reflect action taken, labor hours, parts, materials and other historical and cost related items.

2. Repairs and updates electrical equipment and associated controls with basic blueprint knowledge. Practices and promotes proper safety procedures.

Oversees preventive maintenance on electrical equipment and associated controls. This includes motor starters, motor control centers, switch gears, generators, load centers and distribution panel boxes. Ensures Infrared camera scans performed by schedule and ensures compliance with the preventive maintenance program.

3. Recommends college equipment that would be best maintained or repaired through outside contract. Monitors electrical contracts/contractors to ensure all work is performed to standard trade practice and in accordance with purchase order and equipment maintenance schedule. Uses computer to work closely and interact with contractors, manufacturer's representatives, and other technical support personnel to troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair issues with all components of building electrical systems. Serves as Electrical Shop expert on all maintenance and repair issues pertaining to all electrical equipment such as, transformers, motor starters, motor control centers, switch gears, load centers and distribution panel boxes. Troubleshoots, repairs or recommends procedures for repair of all electrical equipment that occurs after start-up of new equipment & advanced electronic systems. Demonstrates safety knowledge by practicing and adhering to all proper safety procedures and OSHA regulations pertaining to the electrical trade. Consistently wears/uses appropriate personal protective equipment as required. Responsible for ensuring that furniture, floors, walls, & surrounding work area is protected from dust & debris while work is being performed. Also responsible for ensuring that all job sites are thoroughly cleaned when work has been completed.
