Position Summary |
Under the direction of the Director of the Miller Learning Center & Student Success, the Makerspace Coordinator is responsible for managing student staff, supervising day-to-day activities and operations, supporting students, faculty, and staff in exploring new technologies and furthering innovation through the use of equipment, software, and tools available in the makerspace housed in the Miller Learning Center.
This position will work collaboratively with
EITS staff in the Miller Learning Center to
hire, train, and supervise student staff who will provide assistance with the use of the technology in the makerspace, tech lending, and also the new and emerging technologies within the creative engagement wing. Consults with vendors, technicians, and colleagues to build partnerships with other experts both on and off campus. The Makerspace Coordinator will coordinate and participate in the development and implementation of training materials, safety standards, operating procedures, and policies for the Makerspace and other campus fabrication facilities. The Makerspace Coordinator will actively participate in equipment selection, facility layout, and development of safety standards and protocols.
This position schedules and leads tours of the makerspace, determines and implements policies, procedures, programs, and systems necessary to enhance the operation of the space and services. Provides expert technical assistance to faculty, staff, and patrons on the use of emerging technologies (equipment, software, and services); multimedia formats; robotics; virtual reality; and 3D / other specialty printing. Collaborates with the Emerging Technologies Librarian to support curriculum and develop appropriate programming for the makerspace. Creates and revises library guides, tutorials, contributes to the creation of marketing and outreach materials, maintains statistics on the use of the space.
The Makerspace aims to foster an active-learning environment that inspires curiosity, exploration, critical thought, and innovative uses of technology that complement multidisciplinary curricular activities. The Makerspace cultivates discovery and hands-on learning that enhances intellectual curiosity and student success. It is open to all
UGA students, staff, and faculty for educational, non-commercial purposes. The Makerspace Coordinator is a member of the Student Success team which is comprised of 5 librarians, 1 staff member, and student assistants. |
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies |
- Ability to exercise a strong degree of responsibility and independence.
- A pedagogical awareness of active-learning techniques and ability to adjust to a variety of learners' needs and technology skill levels.
- Creative and technical skills associated with multimedia and emerging technologies
- Technical knowledge and mechanical aptitude and working knowledge of fabrication equipment (3D printers; laser cutter; soldering)
- Familiarity with some combination of video and audio production, 3D modeling, printing technology, and DIY electronics and other tools
- Professional, proactive, and effective oral and written communication skills
- Understanding of fabrication lab management or an active making/art practice
- Familiarity with design software: Adobe Creative Suite/CAD programs/Inkscape
- Ability to effectively tutor or mentor others
- High level of organization with proven time-management skills and ability to perform clerical tasks accurately with close attention to detail

- Oversee day-to-day operations of the makerspace, making recommendations on hours, programming, and equipment to ensure its success
- Provide expert technical assistance to library faculty, staff, and patrons on the use of emerging technologies (equipment, software, and services)
- Assist faculty, students, and staff with use of equipment and tools, ensure safety, and ensure compliance with rules and policies of the workspace
- Consults with vendors, technicians, and colleagues to inform efficient operation of the multimedia and emerging technologies infrastructure
- Collaborate with colleagues and student employees to develop documentation, videos, or other support materials
- Independently plan and problem-solve effectively in a fluid, demanding environment. Analyze and interpret policies; develop, revise, and implement procedures for the makerspace. This includes documenting existing and new makerspace processes clearly and comprehensively and ensuring accessibility for staff and users.
- Lead process improvement projects within the makerspace, including the implementation of new tools, technologies, or workflows.
- Contribute to the development of content strategies for makerspace online resources, training materials, and outreach initiatives, ensuring clarity and effectiveness.
- Implement, administer, and evaluate day-to-day activities and make service change recommendations. Act as key contact for the service desk.
- Collect and analyze data, create reports, review and explain trends; formulate and evaluate alternative solutions and/or recommendations to achieve the goals
- Respond to escalated issues from clients and other support teams.
