Professional Experience/ Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience in a public health or health promotion field through coursework or prior work or volunteer experience.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills (e.g. coordinate programs and events, manage data, and prioritize multiple responsibilities).
  • Demonstrated leadership skills (e.g. effective collaboration and self-motivation).
  • Demonstrated strong interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate with a variety of departments, interdisciplinary programs, and campus groups in a team-driven environment.
  • Demonstrated strong written, verbal, and presentation skills.
  • Ability to supervise, train, and advise students.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with training and maintaining a peer education or similar program, or supervision of student/paraprofessional staff.
  • Experience with health education and training, health promotion, outreach and/or prevention administration and operations.
  • Experience in the college health and wellness setting.

  • CHES (Certified Health Education Specialist), MCHES (Master Certified Health Education Specialist), or CPH (Certified in Public Health) preferred.

Education
A Bachelor's degree or equivalent demonstrated experience is required.
A Master's degree in a related field is preferred.

Department Statement
The Assistant Director of Wellness Promotion is a student-oriented health promotion professional that assists with the Shaw Wellness Institute mission of holistic wellness. The role will serve to educate students on the importance of leading a purposeful, healthy, and balanced lifestyle. At the Shaw Wellness Institute, we understand that wellness is an individual journey that needs to be inclusive and supportive. We work with the entire Colgate community to inspire holistic wellness.

This position is focused on the development of preventative approaches to well-being, including particular attention to bystander intervention and psychological well-being. To best meet student needs and be well-versed in the breadth of potential opportunities, this position will engage with students, faculty, staff, and members of professional associations to build a community of support. This position will report to the director of wellness promotion at Shaw Wellness Institute.

President Brian W. Casey is leading the campus through a comprehensive Third-Century Plan to raise the institution's profile as a distinctive and strong undergraduate liberal arts institution. The Third-Century Plan includes a focus on integrated health and wellness. This position will include opportunities to work closely with colleagues in Student Health Services, Haven Survivor Support Services, and Counseling and Psychological Services in support of these strategic efforts.
Accountabilities
The Assistant Director of Wellness Promotion at the Shaw Wellness Institute is responsible for effectively implementing programs to improve students' holistic wellness. The Assistant Director is responsible for creating and implementing population-based, prevention-focused health promotion efforts, with a particular focus on outreach to students and collaboration with campus partners in order to enrich the student experience. Areas of focus include responsibility for:

Program Development

  • Supporting health promotion program development by generating ideas for workshops, including research into evidence-based programs, and collaboration with campus partners;
  • Coordinating assigned outreach events and programs, including logistics, and collaboration with campus partners;
  • Providing financial management for programs and trainings;
  • Capturing and maintaining records, including outreach and program data; and
  • Creating and implementing evidence-based assessment tools to revise or remove ineffective programs.


Student Staff Supervision

  • Effectively recruiting, training, supporting, advising, and evaluating student Shaw Wellness Ambassadors; and
  • Coordination of fall, spring, and ongoing professional development for Shaw Wellness Ambassadors.

Student and Community Engagement

  • Effectively conducting outreach and relationship development with students to encourage engagement with health promotion efforts and programs that are both inclusive and reflective of Colgate's student demographic and specific needs, and also connect with at-risk populations;
  • Effectively communicating assigned population-level prevention areas through social media, web, print, direct emails and the health and wellness newsletter;
  • Serving as an advocate for health and well-being on the Colgate campus through effective engagement with students and participation in assigned committees such as Sexual and Intimate Partner Violence Coalition and Orientation Planning; and
  • Applying knowledge of health prevention to support the development of population and systems-focused approaches to health issues and in delivering prevention programs to students on health-related areas.

Leadership

  • Assisting the director in budget management, reporting, communications, assessment, and other administrative tasks as needed.
  • Using professional acumen, judgment, and leadership to serve in a variety of capacities in the absence of the director;
  • Assessing and making appropriate judgments in cases of emergencies; and
  • Serve in other capacities as needed.

This position has been designated as a Campus Security Authority ( CSA), in accordance with the federal statutory requirements of the Jeanne Clery Act. CSAs are required to and responsible for reporting allegations of crimes they receive from students and employees to the Campus Safety Department.
