Another Source's client, Scripps College is recruiting an Assistant Director of Planning and Construction to join their team in the heart of Southern California. This position will be on-site in Claremont, CA.

Anticipated salary range: $100,000-$113,000. The salary rate of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty, and training.

About the Role

Scripps College is seeking a visionary Assistant Director of Planning & Construction to lead strategic capital and facilities projects across our historic and evolving campus. In this role, you will lead the planning, coordination, and execution of capital and minor improvement projects that shape the future of Scripps College's campus. You will serve as a key strategic partner in creating functional, sustainable, and aesthetically cohesive spaces that align with institutional goals.

You will guide projects from conception to completion, manage construction budgets, collaborate with internal and external stakeholders, and ensure compliance with local, state, and institutional regulations. Your work will directly support the college's mission, enhance the student experience, and contribute to a campus environment that fosters community, innovation, and excellence.

How you will spend your time

Project Planning & Strategy

    Lead planning efforts for capital outlay and minor improvement projects.
  • Participate in pre-project planning to align with goals and requirements.
  • Develop short- and long-term campus planning aligned with the capital renewal program.
  • Direct the preparation of architectural programs, scopes of work, and financial planning documents.
  • Coordinate and oversee project timelines, budgeting, and execution strategy.

Design & Construction Oversight

  • Oversee design development, architectural reviews, and contract documentation.
  • Ensure aesthetic continuity across campus and adherence to master planning goals.
  • Maintain architectural records, storage systems, and archives.
  • Oversee project start-up activities (e.g., office relocations, traffic/transportation analysis).

Stakeholder & Agency Coordination

  • Foster strong partnerships with architects, engineers, contractors, and suppliers.
  • Serve as the primary liaison with Claremont City Planning, SCAQMD, and regulatory bodies.
  • Collaborate with the Budget Office and Procurement on RFP/RFI review and compliance.
  • Actively participate in the Facilities Planning Committee and other assigned groups.

Team Leadership & Operations

  • Supervise and coordinate the daily workflow of project managers.
  • Work closely with the Executive Director and Director of Facilities to ensure seamless team alignment.
  • Promote operational excellence and continuous improvement through problem-solving and resource optimization.
  • Provide guidance on internal policies, procedures, and departmental standards.

Budgeting & Financial Management

  • Manage construction budgets, ensuring sustainability and alignment with strategic priorities.
  • Identify opportunities for cost savings and optimal use of resources.
  • Prepare progress reports and keep leadership informed of project status and adjustments.
  • Guide the Capital Expenditures process and ensure alignment with funding priorities.

Campus & Facilities Development

  • Oversee and maintain inventories for office, housing, and academic spaces.
  • Collaborate with departments to forecast future space needs and support smart growth.
  • Lead development of standards for college signage and visual campus identity.

What you will bring:

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field or any combination of education, training, or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the job.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of building materials, costing procedures and the sequential methods of modern construction and maintenance practices, as well as capital construction project delivery methods.
  • Knowledge of Colleges capital outlay and deferred maintenance programs.
  • Knowledge of Space Inventory Program
  • Knowledge of construction budget preparation and job cost accounting.
  • Knowledge of Uniform Building Code (UPC), California Architectural Barriers Laws (CALABL), California Occupational Safety and Health Act (CALOSHA), Education Code, American with Disabilities Act (ADA) and other related statutes.
  • Overall and technical knowledge of institutional planning, design and construction methodologies and processes of capital projects.
  • Ability to use generally accepted architectural, planning, and construction principles and practices as related to College.
