Description

The Private Sector Business Unit (PSBU) is a diverse business that consists of three main market areas, Production, Distribution and Energy, with the Distribution Market also including a strategic focus on technology clients (i.e. Data Centers, Chip Manufacturing). The PSBU Leader must be a proven water/environmental industry expert with experience in growing a strategic, profitable business. The PSBU leader will be expected to drive long-term profitable growth for BC by leveraging an in-depth understanding of market drivers, client needs, and value driven solutions provided by BC, The PSBU Leader will lead market strategy for the PSBU, in coordination with the company executive management team, and leverage cross business group synergies to result in accelerated growth (i.e. nexus of municipal water and energy). The ability to inspire and lead other experienced managers is a critical component of this role. Effective decision making and business acumen are key. Demonstrated sales, project/ business management, client relationship management, and operations skills are essential. This key company leader will be part of the Executive Leadership team and will be responsible for accelerating the profitable growth of the Private Sector Business Unit and help make Brown and Caldwell the Company of Choice for our most trusted clients, employees, and business partners.

Detailed Description:

Candidates must be able to build and sustain a collaborative environment that truly demonstrates client service, technology, innovation, professionalism, and teamwork. The successful candidate will be a proven leader able to drive significant growth (5%-10% above company and market) in the Private Sector. They will be energetic, a compelling communicator with exceptional diplomatic and persuasive skills, capable of listening and interacting effectively with staff and clients at all organizational levels. The ability to make quick, data driven decisions to drive business profitability and growth is critical.

Providing a positive work environment for employees, business partners, and clients by living and demonstrating commitment to BC's core values of empathy, curiosity, and integrity, is key. This position reports directly to the President or Chief Operating Officer working closely with the other operating Business Units and Enterprise Services.

Job Responsibilities Expectations:

The Business Unit Leader is expected to demonstrate excellence in leadership, deliver high-quality work products, and achieve strong financial performance. They will also be responsible for accelerating the growth of our client base (more, large-scale clients). This leadership role requires critical thinking, agile decision-making in a high-velocity environment, strong business acumen, decisive decision-making, extraordinary talent management ability, and sound ethical character and executive presence.

The Business Unit Leader will:



  • Understand the Private Sector market and grow it in alignment with the company's core strategic goals and imperatives, standards, operational model and values.
  • Be an integral member of the Executive Leadership Team (ELT), engaging with peers in the other business units, enterprise units and support functions to achieve the best outcome for BC.
  • Utilize Enterprise units and support services and teams to deliver projects and outcomes that make both the PSBU and the broader company successful.
  • Cultivating a culture of health, safety, and wellness among our employees through exemplary safety leadership
  • Deliver mutually agreed upon operating results as defined by the company's strategic and annual business plans.
  • Drive PSBU to company level operating metrics (e.g. growth, PFO %) and develop a plan to improve these metrics further.
  • Establish strong relationships with key clients to drive accelerated revenue and profit growth, ensuring BC remains their company of choice. It is critical to develop strong working relationships with top executives of key clients within the PSBU.
  • Collaborate with municipal business units to leverage cross-business services to drive unique solutions to both municipal and private sector clients (i.e. water reuse, groundwater modeling, beneficial partnerships like in data centers).
  • Communicate with confidence, clarity, and frequency, ensuring employees understand what needs to be done, by when, and how, with a strong awareness of self and others. Emphasize the importance of culture and the manner in which tasks are accomplished. Demonstrate leadership and behaviors in line with BC values.
  • Drive performance and accountability and make quick tough decisions when needed.
  • Execute your work with passion and pursue continuous improvement.
  • Recognize, appreciate, and advance the team mentality that makes BC unique and successful.
  • Prioritize talent acquisition, development, engagement, deployment, and performance to ensure BC's growt
  • Lead and manage the PSBU leadership team to deliver agreed upon goals, including but not limited to, financial performance, sales, staff development, safety, risk, project performance, and enterprise collaboration.
  • Ensure adherence to BC Risk Management policies, practices, and for reducing project breakage across the region.
  • Active participation in the Executive and Operations Leadership Teams, these teams are responsible for running the company and delivering BC short and strategic goals.
  • Travel 45% - 65%



Desired Skills and Experience:



  • B.S. or M.S. preferred in engineering, science, or a related field is required.
  • Professional registration is preferred.
  • A minimum of 20 years of increasingly responsible experience in the environmental services and consulting industry is required.
  • Ability to lead a business unit or enterprise unit at BC or a company of similar or greater size than BC.
  • Ability to demonstrate financial acumen including P&L responsibility.
  • Ability to develop, sell, and deliver complex integrated projects across a diverse geographic region.
  • Experience managing impactful, large project portfolios with a substantial impact on the business.
  • An ability to demonstrate experience managing a large portfolio of projects
  • Ability to demonstrate experience managing successfully within a matrixed/enterprise business model.
  • Experience leading and developing executive-level leaders.
  • Proven collaborator who is able to put the company first and works with all business and functions to improve company performance over individual business units.
  • Excellent knowledge of and presence in key markets in the Private Sector.
  • Experience and knowledge with market competitors and the ability to form successful partnerships to enhance our Private Sector business.
  • Excellent Technical knowledge of environmental solutions.
  • Deep understanding of how to successfully win and deliver work in this environment.
  • B.A. or similar coursework preferred.
  • High business acumen with the ability to drive accelerated profits for the company.


Salary Range: The anticipated starting pay range for this position is based on the employee's primary work location and may be more or less depending upon skills, experience, and education. These ranges may be modified in the future.

Salary $235,000-$330,000
