PRIMARY FUNCTIONS
This part time position supports the Elderly Services Department in operating various recreation programs in community centers. The Recreation Program Assistant helps plan, schedule, and carry out a wide range of recreational activities, special events, and seasonal programs for participants of all ages, with a focus on our older adult residents.
Responsibilities include assisting with facility permits, transporting program participants, and delivering supplies, marketing materials, and other departmental items to Senior Centers, Community Centers, and City Hall. The work is performed under the supervision of the Elderly Services Director or their designee.

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Oversees evening recreational programs and permitted activities at community centers.
  • Assists in planning, scheduling, and running recreational programs and events designed for older adults.
  • Helps organize community events such as festivals, performances, tournaments, and outreach activities.
  • Supports the coordination and supervision of permitted activities within the community centers.
  • Helps create staff schedules, tracks attendance and staff hours, and prepares reports on center activities.
  • Delivers supplies, materials, and documents to Senior Centers, Community Centers, and City Hall.
  • Maintains and tracks inventory in supply rooms; assists with ordering as needed.
  • Keeps storage and work areas clean and organized.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.


EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience assisting with recreational activities, community services, or similar programs.
  • Background in Gerontology, Social Work, Human Services, or a similar field is welcome.


KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Ability to plan, assign and coordinate stakeholders and to ensure the efficient operations of the community center during operating hours, six days per week.

  • Ability to support administrative and supervisory tasks.

  • Strong organizational and communication skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively with staff, clients of all ages, and the general public, with patience, professionalism, and cultural sensitivity in a variety of settings.

  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, and to open and close community center buildings.

  • Must be dependable and able to respond appropriately to emergencies. CPR and basic first aid certification helpful.

  • Capable of lifting and transporting supplies and materials as needed.


NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Valid CT driver's license.
  • Ability to work shifts such as Mon-Sat, 4pm - 8pm.

SALARY, BARGAINING UNIT & TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
This is a Special Funds "Non Tested" position. Continued employment contingent upon availability of future funding. Funding may be terminated at any time.
This part time position is not eligible to receive medical benefits, vacation pay, union membership, or union contractual benefits. Any period of part time employment will not be construed in any way to mean probationary employment. Persons may not be employed in two concurrent positions with the City and/or the Board of Education at the same time.
