Lead Genetic Counselor

Overview

In addition to managing a full caseload, the senior/lead genetic counselor serves as a subject matter expert/resource and mentor for other genetics and high-risk team members, as needed. The lead genetic counselor expertly manages case load while working to enhance processes and assist with leading projects for cancer genetic services. This position utilizes up-to-date theory and methods in everyday review of cases. The senior/lead genetic counselor may provide mentoring to the team, allowing the team members to improve clinic efficiency and increase patient volume, while providing overall feedback to manager, as needed. Serves as the practice genetic counseling expert and may serve as a member of The US Oncology Network GREAT Committee. Supports and adheres to the US Oncology Compliance Program, to include the Code of Ethics and Business Standards.


Responsibilities

May be responsible for assisting with review of internal and external processes to evaluate the quality and efficiency of genetics and high-risk services. Additional goals may include minimizing leakage and developing and maintaining referring provider relationships. This includes but is not limited to:

* Providing assistance for the assessment and scheduling of ASAP patients within the practice

* Creating and implementing unifying processes for all practice genetics and high-risk providers

* Helping to develop and train new clinical support staff

* Continuing to provide exceptional clinical support, as patient volume changes

* Developing and integrating, as necessary, genetic screening tool(s) into the medical record

* Assisting with the completion of data analysis for management to share with practice leadership team and QC studies

2. Partnering with manager and other resources in the coordinating of program development in order for the genetics and high-risk team to remain leaders in field of cancer genetics.

3. May assist with developing processes, such as billing, to accurately track genetic counseling services and revenue.

4. Consistently builds strong collaborative relationships with practice staff, oncology liaisons, and others to develop and evaluate unifying strategies to market the practice genetics and high-risk team as leaders in the field.

5. May be responsible for mentoring site staff to ensure adequate coverage and quality care. Meets individually with staff, if requested, to review case assignments, workflow and productivity. Partners with other genetics and high-risk team members to address and resolve any road blocks and provides creative solutions to challenging cases or workflow issues.

6. Maintains confidentiality of all information related to patients, medical staff, finances and other issues applicable privacy regulations.


Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

* Master's degree in Genetic Counseling from an accredited genetic counseling training program

* Board Certified from the America Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) or American Board of Medical Genetics (ABMG)

* Minimum of five years as a practicing genetic counselor with oncology experience preferred.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to be present at the employee site during regularly scheduled business hours and regularly required to sit or stand and talk or hear. Requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity, and eye-hand coordination. Requires standing and walking for extensive periods of time. Occasionally lifts and carries items weighing up to 40 lbs. Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The work environment may include exposure to communicable diseases, toxic substances, ionizing radiation, medical preparations and other conditions common to an oncology/hematology clinic environment. Work will involve in-person interaction with co-workers and management and/or clients.

Work may require minimal 10% of travel work week. Onsite initially, with potential to transition to a hybrid work schedule.
