About the opportunity

SWCA Environmental Consultants is currently seeking an Assistant Staff Restoration Engineer who can contribute to the growth of our ecological restoration practice in the Pacific Northwest, as well as support SWCA's ecological restoration projects throughout the U.S. The ideal candidate will possess a strong technical skill set in the field of water resources engineering with a demonstrated background in the application of engineering methods to river, wetland and floodplain restoration projects.

This position will be based in Corvallis, Oregon or Whitefish, Montana. Projects will include sites throughout the Pacific Northwest and will entail occasional travel to assess project sites, collect field data, and provide construction observation. This is a full-time, regular, benefits-eligible role with the flexibility to work in a hybrid capacity supporting either our Oregon and/or Montana office locations.

This position can hire at the following levels:

  • Assistant Staff Restoration Engineer: Typically, with up to a year of relevant experience and expertise.
  • Staff Restoration Engineer: Typically, with at least two (2) years of relevant experience and expertise.

What you will accomplish

  • Complete field work in support of river morphology assessments, river/floodplain restoration design, and restoration project effectiveness monitoring including surveying, data collection and reconnaissance to document geomorphic conditions.
  • Process field data and produce summary maps and reports.
  • Analyze a diverse range of water resources data including: watersheds, floodplains, channels, reservoirs, and hydraulic structures using geospatial tools, numerical models, and applied statistics.
  • Apply engineering principles, sound judgment, experience and innovation to accurately execute assigned technical tasks and prepare detailed supporting documentation.
  • Participate in the design of river restoration and floodplain projects by working collaboratively with an interdisciplinary design team consisting of engineers, geomorphologists, ecologists, modelers and project managers.
  • Develop AutoCAD Civil 3D plan set packages and assist engineers in design drafting and deliverables.
  • Provide construction observations for project implementation including survey staking, design layout, design compliance and correspondence with client and construction contractors.
  • Adheres to the safety program and looks out for the safety of others, promptly communicating and mitigating safety hazards.

Experience and qualifications for success

Minimum qualifications:

  • B.S. degree in Civil/ Water Resources Engineering or related field
  • Engineer in Training (EIT) registration
  • Up to one (1) year of related engineering experience. Education with direct, applied classwork in Engineering can be substituted for job experience.
  • Excellent oral communication, technical writing and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in hydrologic, hydraulic, and statistical methods.
  • Competency with hydraulic modeling software, including the USACE HEC suite.
  • Experience with CAD/GIS software such as Autodesk Civil3D or ESRI ArcDesktop.
  • Applicants must have valid driver's license and be able to meet SWCA's driver requirements.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Two (2) years of related engineering experience. Education with direct, applied classwork in Engineering can be substituted for job experience.
  • Knowledge of fluvial geomorphology, river mechanics, and sediment transport.
  • Field surveying experience utilizing both GPS and total station techniques.
  • Ability to travel out of town overnight and work in a wide range of field conditions.

An employee in this Corvallis, Oregon or Whitefish, MT-based position can expect an hourly rate of:

Assistant Staff Restoration Engineer = 26.75/hr. - $34.78/hr.

Staff Restoration Engineer = 30.50/hr. - $39.59/hr.

Actual pay within this range may depend on experience, qualifications, geographic location, client requirements where applicable, and other factors permitted by law. Regular-status employees are also eligible for performance bonuses.
