Telecommunications Mechanic II (OSP)

Abacus Technology is seeking a Telecommunications Mechanic II to provide utility locate support services for Outside Plant (OSP) telecommunications infrastructure at Fort Bragg. This is a full-time position.

Locate and mark buried communication cables, including copper, fiber optic, and signal lines, in accordance with industry standards and excavation safety requirements.
• Utilize cable locating tools and GIS mapping software to identify underground telecom infrastructure accurately.
• Perform site surveys and coordinate with engineering teams to verify OSP cable paths before excavation.
• Ensure markings are clearly visible and follow standardized color codes for utility identification.
• Assess excavation sites and provide recommendations to prevent cable damage and service disruptions.
• Follow OSHA confined space entry requirements when locating cables in hazardous areas.
• Work closely with construction crews, utility companies, and military personnel to ensure proper procedures are followed during ground disturbance activities.
• Immediately report damaged or at-risk telecommunications infrastructure to the appropriate authorities.
• Diagnose OSP cable faults and connectivity issues using signal tracing and tone-generating equipment.
• Assist with emergency cable locate requests and urgent repair coordination.
• Support network teams in OSP infrastructure projects, including fiber optic expansions and maintenance.
• Maintain compliance with Army and DoD telecommunications policies, OSHA safety standards, and industry best practices.
• Ensure proper documentation of cable locations, excavation site conditions, and potential risks.

3+ years experience in OSP telecommunications, cable locating, and network infrastructure maintenance. Bachelor's degree in a related field desired. Must hold the following certifications: BICSI Copper (INSTC); Fiber (INSTF); OSHA Confined Space; and Underground Utility Locating Certification. Must have training in the following: GPS Trimble support; and OEM training for conventional cable locator and Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR). Security+ certification desired. Manufacturer-specific equipment training for cable locating tools desired. Extensive knowledge of underground utility locating equipment, telecommunication cable types, and industry safety standards. Experience performing site surveys, interpreting engineering drawings, and marking utility locations per OSHA and industry guidelines. Proficient in troubleshooting underground cable paths and identifying potential risks for excavation sites. Able to train construction personnel on OSP best practices for excavation safety. Experience working with GIS mapping software, utility marking standards, and excavation safety protocols. Hands-on experience with underground fiber optic and copper cable installations. Able to interact professionally with all levels of an organization. Must be a US citizen and hold a current Secret clearance.
