Pay Range

$7,035.00 - $8,040.00 monthly

This is the lowest to highest salary we in good faith believe we would pay for this role at the time of this posting; pay will not be below any applicable local minimum wage. An employee's position within the salary range will be based on several factors including, but not limited to, specific competencies, relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, seniority, geographic location, performance, and business or organizational needs.

We are seeking an Inertial Fusion Academic Graduate Appointee to join our team. In this role, you will engage in practical research on materials design and engineering topics. As part of the Materials Engineering Division (MED) within the Engineering Directorate, you will contribute to advancing strategies for national security and support LLNL's Institutional Initiative of Inertial Fusion Energy. This position provides an excellent opportunity to further your educational and career goals while conducting impactful research.

You Will

• Conduct research at the intersection of phase stability-based materials selection and advanced manufacturing.
• Support LLNL by contributing to ongoing research activities, including literature reviews, computational materials science, and experimental fabrication work.
• Participate in research planning and evaluation discussions with other members of the research staff.
• Present research findings to LLNL staff as appropriate.
• Prepare reports and/or publications as assigned.
• Perform all assignments in accordance with ES&H, security, and business practice requirements and policies.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

• Bachelor's degree in Applied Physics, Engineering, or a related field.
• Experience with ceramics processing, including sintering and thermal processing.
• Experience with metallic and composite materials processing, such as densification and thermal processing.
• Experience with specimen preparation for characterization.
• Experience with advanced manufacturing involving fluid systems.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and to prepare, present, and explain technical results.
• Basic experience with light or scanning electron microscopy.
• Demonstrated initiative, interpersonal skills, creativity, and ability to work effectively in a collaborative multidisciplinary team environment.

Desired Qualifications

• Experience with computational physics.
• Experience with characterization tools, such as electron microscopy.
• Familiarity with synthetic chemistry.

Security Clearance

National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA)

The 2025 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), Section 3112, generally prohibits citizens of China, Russia, Iran and North Korea without dual US citizenship or legal permanent residence from accessing specific non-public areas of national security or nuclear weapons facilities. The restrictions of NDAA Section 3112 apply to this position. To be qualified for this position, Candidates must be eligible to access the Laboratory in compliance with Section 3112.

Sensitive Compartmented Information Facilities requireseparate approval. Hearing aids without wireless capabilities or wireless that has been disabled are allowed in Limited Areas, Secure Space and Transit/Buffer Space within buildings.
