National Grid is hiring a Lead Engineer, Electrical Planning and Designfor Massachusetts. This is a Hybrid Role - Must live within a commutable distance to one of our locations

Job Purpose

National Grid is implementing its Electric Sector Modernization Plan (ESMP) to enable an electric network that supports the Commonwealth's climate, clean energy, and equity goals and delivers the fair, affordable, and clean energy transition for all our customers and communities. Working within the New England Protection Policy & Support and IEC 61850 team, the Lead Engineer position is responsible for capital delivery support, development of protection policy and standards, and support for disturbance monitoring equipment including phasor measurement units.

Key Accountabilities
  • Support implementation and delivery of the Electric Sector Modernization Plan and Capital Work Plan. Key accountabilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Support the delivery of protection scope and compliance related outage and setting coordination data requests for substation projects.
  • Develop relay setting templates and supporting materials for parameter calculation, simulation, testing and implementation.
  • Perform system modeling to execute simulations and perform relay setting development.
  • Support the design, application, installation and maintenance of DME and PMUs.
  • Develop, implement, and provide technical support for substation protection philosophy and standards across transmission, sub-transmission, and distribution voltage levels.
  • Evaluate arc flash incident energy associated with fault scenarios, maintain standard guidance, calculation methods, develop mitigation strategies, and provide technical support to engineering and operations regarding arc flash.
  • Evaluate personal protective grounding requirements for National Grid substations, develop and maintain standards, calculation methods, and provide technical support to engineering and operations regarding personal protective grounding.
  • Lead evaluations for load sensitive relays, perform fault current comparisons, and protection system coordination studies to deliver continued compliance with NERC PRC requirements.
  • Provide technical support and other support, including emergency support, to various departments including, but not limited to, engineering and operations.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or electrical engineering technology from an ABET accredited engineering institution required.
  • 6 years minimum of protection and control work experience.
  • Familiarity with IEEE/ANSI Standards, NESC and National Electrical Code (as applicable).
  • EIT Certification or Registered Professional Engineering License a plus.
  • Knowledge of NPCC Directories and requirements and NERC PRC requirements; their application and compliance.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office products (Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Word, Visio, etc.).
  • Good working knowledge of industry standards, safety standards, existing electrical design codes, and federal and state regulations affecting protection. Knowledge of electric arc flash hazards and OSHA existing standards for utility-type work a plus.
  • Experience with electric power facilities with an emphasis on protection and control systems.
  • Experience in ASPEN modeling and performing protective relay setting development using vendor software such as SEL and ABB a plus.
  • Demonstrate effective communication skills (verbal, written, and presentation) and leadership qualities.
  • Valid driver's license required with a safe driving history that meets National Grid's Safe Driver policy to facilitate travel, as required, across US service territory.

Salary - $150,000 - $176,000
