Job Summary

The anticipated duration of this temporary assignment is approximately 2 months.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Direct and administer an independent program with full responsibility for both administrative and programmatic activities.

  • Write and edit high-quality scientific content, including research papers, grant proposals, white papers, and other publications.

  • Ensure scientific accuracy, consistency, and compliance with publication guidelines and standards.

  • Support strategic planning of scientific experiments and guide personnel in designing experimental protocols and optimizing research workflows.

  • Lead strategic planning of publication pipelines, including journal selection, submission timelines, and co-author coordination.

  • Ensure scientific rigor while making content accessible to diverse audiences.

  • Monitor trends in scientific publishing and ensure adherence to best practices and evolving standards.

  • Support grant writing efforts by conceptualizing research strategies and aligning them with funder objectives.

  • Identify and pursue funding opportunities and new revenue streams.

  • Assist in the development of research initiatives.

  • Participate in professional conferences.

  • Provide public relations support for scientific programs and initiatives.

  • Design and create visually compelling scientific figures, graphs, and illustrations.

  • Develop engaging presentations for conferences, stakeholders, and internal leadership.

  • Ensure presentations effectively communicate complex scientific concepts to varied audiences.

  • Serve as a liaison between senior leadership, scientific teams, external collaborators, and other stakeholders throughout the publication process.

  • Facilitate cross-functional communication to align scientific strategy with institutional priorities.

  • Promote scientific initiatives through collaboration with the QBI Communications Team.

  • Coordinate with the QBI Media and Events Team on scientific communication strategies

Department Description

UCSF's Temporary Employment Program (TEP) recruits and hires temporary employees for immediate clerical and technical support services to UCSF Departments and various off-campus locations. UCSF departments deploy temporary employees to work on special projects, fill in for regular employees who are on vacation or leave, or to temporarily fill a vacant position during recruitment. Frequently temporary employees become successful candidates for career and limited appointment positions.

Required Qualifications


  • Academic background and experience in selected area of research

  • Advanced oral and written communication skills

  • Advanced ability to think creatively and independently on concepts requiring advanced analytical skills

  • Advanced interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse groups to achieve results

  • Advanced ability to work collaboratively with internal and external peers and managers

  • Highly skilled fundraising experience

  • Strong scientific writing and editing abilities, with a demonstrated track record of publications in high-impact peer-reviewed journals

  • Expertise in designing scientific figures and presentations, with proficiency in tools such as GraphPad, Adobe Illustrator, PowerPoint, and Keynote

  • Ability to distill complex scientific concepts into clear, compelling, and accessible formats for both technical and non-technical audiences

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate across different teams and functions

  • Broad scientific expertise as proven by publications in diverse scientific fields; able to provide scientific input to QBI leadership and scientific teams on various programs across infectious disease, cancer, and neuroscience research

  • Terminal degree in a related area (PhD, JD, MD, etc.) and/or equivalent experience/training

  • 5+ years of experience in scientific writing, scientific project management, strategic planning, or communication in an academic or industry research setting

  • Hands-on research experience in addition to graduate work in an academic setting

Preferred Qualifications


  • Advanced knowledge of administrative, budgetary, human resources and financial principles and practices
  • Background in Systems Biology
  • Strong problem-solving and critical thinking skills, with the ability to navigate complex challenges in scientific research and communication
  • High level of attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Flexibility and availability, including weekends, for urgent communication with QBI senior team
  • Proactive, self-motivated, and able to work independently and as part of a team
