About the Job

Position Overview

The TRIO Upward Bound (UB) Summer 2025 Lead Residential Youth Counselor (Lead RYC) will assist the TRIO UB Residential Counselor and Advisor oversee the residential component of TRIO UB summer program. The Lead RYC will provide mentorship, supervision, and support to high school students who are low-income and first in their family to attend college. The Lead RYC is responsible for creating a safe, inclusive, and engaging residential environment, supervising a team of RYCs, coordinating evening programming and serving as a liaison between staff and students. The Lead RYC will live in the residence halls with the TRIO UB students for five weeks from June 15th to July 18th.

Complimentary single-room accommodation and three daily meals provided in the university residence hall from Sunday through Friday for the duration of the five-week program. All entrance fees for evening activities are covered by the program.

Student/Parent Orientation

  • Saturday, June 5, 2025 from 10:00am to 12:00pm

OR

  • Wednesday, June 11, 2025 from 6:00pm to 8:00pm

Staff Training/Pre Planning Week

  • Monday, June 9 to June 13, 2025
  • Monday June 9: All day summer staff orientation

Residential Weeks

  • Monday, June 16, 2025 to July 18, 2025
  • No classes June 19th and July 4th

Staff Post-planning

  • Monday, July 21, 2025 to July 25,2025, hours vary, as needed

Job Responsibilities

Student Supervision & Engagement (40%)
  • Support the development of a positive residential culture that fosters respect, responsibility, and community.
  • Supervise students in the residence halls and during scheduled activities, meals, and free time.
  • Support student success by proactively monitoring and encouraging positive performance, consistent attendance, and respectful behavior.
  • Provide guidance and intervention when needed to help students stay on track.
  • Ensure compliance with all program rules, safety protocols, and university policies.
Staff Supervision & Leadership (25%)
  • Lead and support a team of residential youth counselors.
  • Model effective communication, professionalism, and a student-centered approach.
  • Provide mentorship and direction to residential staff in managing student behavior and engagement.
  • Help facilitate staff debriefs and regular check-ins with team members.
Program Planning & Coordination (20%)
  • Support the Residential Coordinator in the development, coordination, and implementation of evening activities that support students' academic and personal growth.
  • Work with Residential Coordinate to oversee logistics and scheduling for residential programming.
  • Maintain communication between residential staff and Residential Coordinator, as well as academic/instructional staff.
  • Participate in weekly staff meetings, contribute to program improvement efforts, provide feedback to program leadership.
Administrative Duties & Communication (10%)
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation (attendance, incident reports, behavior logs, etc.)
  • Communicate with program staff, parents/guardians, and external partners as needed.
  • Assist with residential orientation and closing activities
  • Ensure compliance with the MDE Summer Food Service Program
  • Other duties as assigned
Crisis Management & On-Call Support (5%)
  • Serve in an on-call rotation to respond to student emergencies during overnight hours.
  • Follow established protocols for safety, medical concerns, and conflict resolution.
  • Remain calm and solution-focused in high-pressure situations.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for residential student concerns, incidents, and emergencies.
Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Prior experience residing in on-campus university housing.
  • Minimum of one year of experience working with high school-aged students.
  • At least one summer of experience in an overnight residential program serving high school students.
  • Must not be enrolled in summer courses during the program period.
  • Possess a valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with people from a variety of communities, backgrounds, and identities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Energetic, creative, and responsible individuals who demonstrate maturity, take initiative, and thrive in dynamic environments working with youth.
  • Experience working with culturally and socioeconomically diverse youth, preferably in a residential or educational setting, with a strong commitment to supporting their academic and personal growth.
  • Background in planning and coordinating events or activities for youth programs.
  • Demonstrated experience in supervising peers, youth, or program participants.
  • Individuals who share similar socio-economic backgrounds or life experiences as the students served by TRIO Upward Bound are strongly encouraged to apply.

TRIO Upward Bound is a federally funded, U.S. Department of Education equal educational opportunity program designed to generate within our students (and parents), the skills and motivation necessary to both graduate high school and enter and graduate successfully complete a postsecondary degree. TRIO UB annually serves 118 low-income and first generation college bound youth from four high schools in Minneapolis. Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: The salary range for this position is $20/hr. Final salary offers are dependent on the candidate's experience, skills, and internal equity within the department.
