The Humphrey School of Public Affairs' Assistant Director of Academic Technology manages and coordinates support of the school's academic technology services including its instructional computer labs and academic software purchasing. This position, reporting to the Director of Information Technology and to the Assistant Dean of Graduate Education, is responsible for managing a team of 2 full-time technologists focused on research, testing, training and documentation of academic technology services within the school. Additionally, the position coordinates and serves as a liaison with campus partners to keep the school's departmental classrooms and computer labs up to date and to provide maximum value to instructors and the broader Humphrey School community.

Academic Technology (40%)

  • Provide academic technology training and consultation to assist instructors in pedagogically sound use of technology for teaching
  • Consult with and support faculty to identify innovative course delivery technologies that are pedagogically appropriate (i.e., fully-online, hybrid, hyflex) by providing consultation, project planning and implementation of academic technologies
  • Collaborate with subject matter experts and use instructional design principles to create course materials for digital learning tools and software
  • Develop trainings and resources to facilitate the use of technology for teaching; this includes workshops, professional development sessions, and user-facing documentation and resources
  • Manage communications related to teaching, technology, and academic programs
  • Manage the assessment, purchase and planning around instructional software for academic courses
  • Advise on possibilities to expand use of technology in teaching and innovation of curriculum delivery
  • Manage and support consultations on accessible and usable design in course sites and instructional methods
  • Represent The Humphrey School in the University of Minnesota's academic technology communities; serve as liaison between instructors and Center for Educational Innovation (CEI) and Academic Technology Support Services (ATSS), encouraging instructors to leverage their services; serve as the Humphrey School's representative to the University's Online Steering Committee

Administrative Coordination (30%)

  • Manage instructional software contracts and ensure physical or remote access to those software titles for instructors and students
  • Manage operational tasks for departmental classrooms and instructional computer labs
  • Plan and coordinate in-room technology maintenance and upgrades
  • Track and monitor academic technology-related expenses and advise on the annual software budget proposal
  • Coordinate with campus partners and external vendors on the support and management of the school's classrooms and instructional computer labs
  • Develop, distribute, analyze, report, and make referrals for the annual 'Exit Survey' for Humphrey School graduates

Supervision & Leadership (30%)

  • Supervise direct reports and manage their hiring, onboarding/offboarding, coaching and development
  • Establish project plans and cross-functional work teams to implement strategic priorities
  • Manage team processes for support and consultation
  • Oversee the team's course creation in Canvas as well as the design and implementation of new online and hybrid offerings
  • Lead the team in surveying and consulting with instructors to assess their technology aptitude, needs, and opportunities
  • Collaborate with leadership to establish strategic vision, goals, and priorities for academic technology services
Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • BA/BS plus at least four years of experience, or a master's degree plus at least two years of relevant experience
  • Years of progressively more responsible work experience in academic technology and project development/management
  • Prior team lead or supervisory experience
  • Demonstrated experience in the development of curriculum materials using instructional technology
  • Experience with web-based learning management systems (such as Canvas) and core Learning Tools Interoperability (such as Turnitin, Respondus, etc)
  • Experience supporting online conferencing software (such as Zoom)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience consulting with faculty about teaching methods that foster student-centered learning and assessing learning outcomes
  • Experience developing fully online courses
  • Experience with learning space technology planning and management (including computer labs and hybrid classrooms)
  • Familiarity with Title II related digital accessibility compliance requirements
  • Demonstrated experience with instructional design process models such as ADDIE
