Job Summary
This is a part-time, limited term position contingent on availability of funds located at the Gulf Coast Research and Extension Center in Fairhope, AL.

The individual selected for this position will assist in research on marine fishes in the northern Gulf of Mexico.

Essential Functions
Essential functions include but are not limited to the following:

  • Participating in offshore research cruises
  • Performing mark-recapture tagging on marine fishes, reef fish surveys, and SCUBA surveys
  • Maintain and care for laboratory captive fishes in a controlled environment
  • Using and maintaining laboratory equipment
  • Cleaning research vessels
  • Performing other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications


Minimum Qualifications
Level I: High school diploma or equivalent.

Level II: High school diploma or equivalent plus 1 year of experience in research and/or lab equipment operations

Level III: High school diploma or equivalent plus 4 years of experience in research and/or lab equipment operations

Substitutions allowed for Experience:
Degrees accepted in lieu of experience for advanced levels, at a rate of one year relevant education per year of required experience.
Minimum Skills, License, and Certifications


Minimum Skills and Abilities

  • Interpersonal communication skills and a commitment to an inclusive and diverse working environment


Minimum Technology Skills
  • Computer skills in using programs such as Excel and Word
Minimum License and Certifications
  • Must possess or have the ability to successfully obtain a boater's operator license immediately following the start date

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in Fisheries, Marine Fisheries Ecology, Marine Biology, or closely related field
  • Marine fishing experience

  • SCUBA diving experience
