This position is responsible for providing leadership within a population health team. The team is responsible for developing, producing, and distributing identification and stratification tools to the health care delivery teams within Optum Health. This role will lead the team which supports use case development of NLP concepts in downstream applications, including population health analytics. Daily responsibilities include managing team and production processes; developing project scope, conclusions and recommendations; working with clinical and operational teams to drive performance; meeting departmental turnaround times and ensuring accurate and timely completion of deliverables. Additional responsibilities involve strategic trend identification, issue resolution and technical solutions related to data, and supporting data flow and algorithm development.

Primary Responsibilities:



  • Manages processes and staff to achieve operational excellence. Owns end-to-end processes
  • Develops full understanding of Population Health Analytics programs and goals to identify opportunities where NLP can add value
  • Performs statistical analyses to monitor quality and completeness of the concepts extracted by the NLP engine
  • Designs, produces and supports development of dashboards and key performance indicator reports to meet customer requirements and monitor quality and completeness of NLP extracts
  • Leads initiatives in support of operations, project work, and innovative/exploratory analyses
  • Works with clinical, operational, and technical teams to identify, prioritize, and develop use cases for NLP extracted concepts
  • Researches and investigates key business problems through quantitative analyses of healthcare data. Provides management with statistical findings and conclusions
  • Identifies and implements appropriate analytic approaches and methodologies which align to the problem
  • Leverages and coordinates enterprise-wide capabilities to meet business specific needs and to support operations and production environment
  • Participates in the planning, development, and deployment of business strategy
  • Communicates results to relevant audiences and incorporates results into forecasting process and reporting
  • Provides team leadership to and is accountable for supporting the performance of the NLP Team



Positions in this function are responsible for the management and manipulation of mostly structured data, with a focus on building business intelligence tools, conducting analysis to distinguish patterns and recognize trends, performing normalization operations and assuring data quality. Depending on the specific role and business line, example responsibilities in this function could include creating specifications to bring data into a common structure, creating product specifications and models, developing data solutions to support analyses, performing analysis, interpreting results, developing actionable insights and presenting recommendations for use across the company. Roles in this function could partner with stakeholders to understand data requirements and develop tools and models such as segmentation, dashboards, data visualizations, decision aids and business case analysis to support the organization. Other roles involved could include producing and managing the delivery of activity and value analytics to external stakeholders and clients. Team members will typically use business intelligence, data visualization, query, analytic and statistical software to build solutions, perform analysis and interpret data. Positions in this function work on predominately descriptive and regression-based analytics and tend to leverage subject matter expert views in the design of their analytics and algorithms. This function is not intended for employees performing the following work: production of standard or self-service operational reporting, casual inference led (healthcare analytics) or data pattern recognition (data science) analysis; and/or image or unstructured data analysis using sophisticated theoretical frameworks.

Required Qualifications:



  • 7+ years of work experience in team and program management
  • 7+ years of experience in health care analytics
  • 3+ years of analyzing NLP extracts and / or working with an NLP development team
  • Advanced experience utilizing the following content within analyses, modeling, and use case development:

    • Natural Language Processing: Named Entity Recognition and Entity Relation Extraction (position will not be involved in creating NLP extraction models)
    • Standard clinical terminologies: SNOMED CT, LOINC, RxNorm
    • Healthcare coding systems: ICD-10, CPT


  • Knowledge of healthcare data and regulations (e.g., HIPAA, HL7)
  • Solid understanding of the full Systems Development Life Cycle (SDLC) with Agile/Scrum and associated practices
  • Proficient in the following:

    • Cloud Environment Platform: Microsoft Azure (solidly preferred), Google Cloud Platform, Amazon Web Services (AWS)
    • Database: Snowflake, Oracle, SQL Server, PostgreSQL
    • Version Control System: GIT
    • Programming\Scripting Languages: SQL, Python
    • Markup Language: HTML
    • Messaging Formats: XML, JSON, HL7, FHIR
    • Data Visualization: Tableau or Power BI
    • Development and Interface Applications: Visual Studio Code, DBeaver


  • Proficient with MS Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
  • Proven solid verbal and written communication skills, including ability to present ideas and concepts effectively
  • Proven ability to work with and manage large amounts of data
  • Proven solid facilitation, critical thinking, problem solving, decision making and analytical skills
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects
  • Demonstrated ability to present to Sr. leadership audiences

The salary range for this role is $106,800 to $194,200 annually based on full-time employment. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. UnitedHealth Group complies with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
