Job Summary

The Feeney Lab, in the UCSF Division of Experimental Medicine, at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital, is hiring a highly motivated SRA 1 or 2 to perform lab-based translational research, with general supervision, that aims to understand human immunity to childhood pathogens including malaria and CMV. The candidate will contribute to a research collaboration investigating childhood malaria in Uganda. Our lab strives to understand the human immune response to malaria and other childhood pathogens, and to harness this knowledge to improve vaccines, prevention strategies, and immunomodulatory therapies.

The incumbent will have responsibilities that include performance of cellular immunology assays based on flow cytometry (FACS ARIA and spectral flow cytometers), development and validation of new flow panels and assays, RNA expression analysis and sequencing, data management, as well as using programming languages to analyze high parameter cytometry and gene expression data. The candidate will also be expected to train new lab members in basic skills of PBMC separation and cryopreservation and basic immunology techniques. The research associate will help to apply these assays to hypothesis-driven research projects, working closely with postdoctoral fellows and graduate students while receiving additional direct mentorship from the PI. In addition, the SRA will perform basic lab management tasks including ordering of supplies, coordinating sample shipments to collaborators, attendance at safety meetings and enforcement of safety procedures, and coordination of laboratory inspections.

The purpose of this position is to perform cellular immunology assays on human blood samples from clinical research samples obtained in the malaria endemic region of Tororo, Uganda, The Staff Research Associate will be located in San Francisco, but will provide a role in helping to coordinate the activities of the PI's field laboratory in Uganda with researchers in Uganda and San Francisco. As such, a successful candidate will possess exemplary communication skills and a capacity to work in a cross-cultural environment.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $28.04 - $45.09 (Hourly Rate).

The Division of Experimental Medicine is a translational, wet lab research unit comprised of 8 immunological research groups consisting of 10 faculty members and 65+ staff, trainees, and post-docs. Our labs use cutting edge technologies to answer clinically important questions about host-pathogen interactions across globally devastating infectious diseases, including HIV, Malaria, and Tuberculosis. Required Qualifications

SRA 1: BA/BS in a related science and knowledge of, or experience with, the basic techniques or methods required by the position; and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience;

  • Experience with general laboratory techniques and ability to perform experiments with attention to detail and reproducibility.
  • Knowledge of various cell culture procedures and advanced laboratory techniques, such as: cell-based assays using Flow Cytometry-based platforms, molecular techniques, and others
  • Ability to work independently under general supervision
  • Excellent verbal communication skills
  • Strong ability to work well with a team.
  • Ability to adapt and use good judgement when making decisions.
  • Ability to train staff with a wide range of educational backgrounds.
  • Familiarity with use of relevant software programs (Microsoft Word, Excel, R etc.)
SRA 2: In addition to the above, one or more years of recent, directly related work experience, utilizing the techniques or methods required by the position and demonstrating technical expertise in these areas; or an equivalent combination of education and experience

Preferred Qualifications


  • 2-3 years of experience in laboratory research
  • Experience with cell culture and flow cytometry
  • Basic molecular biology skills (DNA extraction, PCR)
  • Familiarity with statistical software and/or R programming
