West Virginia University WVU) School of Medicine seeks a Regional Chair of Internal Medicine for the Eastern Division in collaboration with West Virginia University Hospitals/University Health Associates. This is an exceptional leadership opportunity for a physician with unwavering commitment to excellence in clinic care, education and research.

SUMMARY: The Regional Chair of the Department of Internal Medicine - Eastern Division is responsible for overall clinical, educational, scholarship/research, and service provided by the Department on the Eastern campus of the WVU School of Medicine and WVU Medicine East. This includes ensuring the highest quality of care and service, consistency in the standard of practice, maintaining excellence across the educational spectrum and enabling scholarly advances in the field. The regional chair facilitates an interdisciplinary approach to achieve excellence in clinical care, education, and research in an environment in which collaboration is valued and encouraged.

Under the guidance of the East Dean, the regional chair will work closely with the WVU School of Medicine Chair of the Department of Internal Medicine, Morgantown and the WVU Medicine East Chief Medical Officer and WVUH-E hospital leadership teams to align clinical, educational and scholarly initiatives, as well as physician recruitment, retention and strategic planning for clinical and academic initiatives and services.

ALLOCATION OF TIME: Administrative 50%; Clinical and Educational 50% (variable).

EDUCATIONAL:

  • Works collaboratively with Eastern Division Dean, Department of Internal Medicine in Morgantown, and WVU Health Sciences to ensure academic standards and excellence of education for medical students, residents and allied health learners.
  • Supports and supervises the Internal Medicine Residency Program Director and complies with the standards of the Office of Graduate Medical Education
  • Promotes the recruitment, retention, and mentoring of academic faculty.
  • Assures continuing faculty development activities in education, scholarship, research, and outreach.
  • Provides annual summative evaluation and oversight of all faculty, particularly with regards to the promotion and tenure cycle, as well as ongoing formative evaluation and feedback.
  • Acts as a role model for students, residents, and physicians of the Department.

CLINICAL:

  • Participates in the clinical care of patients in the inpatient and/or setting.
  • Provides leadership and management for clinical operations within the Department of Internal Medicine working directly with the administrative director of internal medicine and providing oversight to the internal medicine specialty physician directors in coordination with the East CMO and the Chair of the Department of Medicine, Morgantown.
  • Determines the qualifications and assesses the competency of all members of the department and coordinates and provides oversight of all medical staff as it relates to credentialing, re-credentialing and privileging in coordination with hospital medical executive committees.
  • Ensures that patient care delivery and clinical standards for the department are consistent with current professional guidelines, accreditation standards, and the mission, vision, and values of the WVU School of Medicine, University Health Associates, and WVU Medicine.
  • Monitors patient, customer, and employee satisfaction in accordance with organizational goals and guidelines, while maintaining clinical excellence.
  • Encourages the practice of evidence-based medicine, engagement with quality initiatives and goals of the organization, and optimal use of the Electronic Medical Record including timely completion of medical charting.
  • Collaborates with the senior leadership to develop and monitor continual performance improvement.

HOSPITAL:

  • In coordination with WVUH-E CMO and inpatient clinical leadership, contributes to the planning, implementation, and evaluation of inpatient internal medicine general and subspecialty clinical services.
  • Works with hospital leadership to monitor physician productivity, quality, access, and patient and staff satisfaction.
  • Serves as spokesperson for the department, advises leadership, and acts as an agent for implementing the policies and procedures of the hospital with internal medicine faculty and learners.
  • Coordinates with hospital leadership to optimize access and the delivery of care to patients.
  • Ensures that patient care is consistent with current professional standards, as well as with the mission, vision, and values of the hospital.
  • Collaborates with quality and compliance officers in performance improvement projects, monitoring of morbidity and mortality, sentinel event reports, key performance indicators and established metrics and dashboards.
  • Participates in medical staff committees as assigned.

RESEARCH AND SCHOLARSHIP:

  • Participates in scholarly activities and/or research.
  • Supports and guides faculty to develop and enhance academic and professional development.
  • Provides appropriate mentoring for academic, scholarly, research and professional growth.
  • Encourages and rewards grant funding in clinical research, population studies, and other areas appropriate to the discipline of Internal Medicine.
  • Seeks interdisciplinary collaboration in research and scholarly activities.

FINANCIAL:

  • Overall responsibility for cost-effective management of departmental finances including centrality allocated funding, income from clinical operations, grant funding, foundation resources, and other income necessary for operation of the Department.
  • Participates in the budget cycle and space planning.
  • Provides recommendations regarding compensation and benefit programs for faculty, medical staff and allied health professionals working in department, and updates them regularly.
  • Makes recommendations for annual capital improvements, space planning and future fiscal needs of the department.
  • Coordinates fiscal activities with the Residency Program Director, Department Administrator, and other appropriate personnel.

COMMUNITY RELATIONS AND OUTREACH:

  • Establish and maintain collaborative relationships with community leaders and practitioners, referring professionals, and recognized lay organizations.
  • Maintains active professional relationships with former graduates practicing in the state and region.
  • Participates in local and regional leadership forums and societies or delegates these responsibilities.
  • Remains active in local, state, regional and national professional societies appropriate to Internal Medicine.

STRATEGIC PLANNING:

  • Participates in active and ongoing strategic planning for the department in concert and congruent with that of the Eastern Division, WVUH-E (WVU Medicine East), WVU Health Sciences Center, and WVU School of Medicine Department of Internal Medicine.

SPECIFIC DUTIES:

  • Direct patient care, as appropriate for training, expertise, and experience
  • Teaching of medical students, residents, and allied health professionals
  • Creation and execution of an appropriate departmental budget, with the assistance of the Departmental Administrator and other key personnel.
  • Oversight of the clinical operations, educational activities, and scholarly efforts, with delegation of duties as appropriate, to include hiring and replacement of staff, capital purchases and compliance.
  • Committee and council duties as assigned.
  • Annual faculty evaluation and completion of promotion and tenure requirements.
  • Hiring and replacement and retention of faculty.
  • Departmental strategic planning in conjunction with institutional initiatives.
  • Setting, monitoring, and ensuring equitable compensation within the institutional framework.
  • Maintenance of accreditation of all educational programs, both pre-doctoral and post-graduate.
  • Assist in setting of personal and departmental goals with measurable outcomes.
  • Promote and develop faculty and staff personal and professional development.

MINIMAL QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine, with ongoing maintenance of certification.
  • Eligible for medical licensure in the state of West Virginia, with an ongoing, active license once achieved.
  • Ten years or more experience in practicing Internal Medicine or its Specialties, with demonstrated leadership experience.
  • Experience in teaching medical students and residents.
  • Demonstration of successful fiscal and personnel management.
