Genentech
United States, California, South San Francisco
Apr 19, 2025
The Position

A position is available for a postdoctoral fellow to join the Genentech Computational Sciences (gCS) organization, which develops and applies best in class computational methods to the most relevant scientific problems across all stages of the pipeline. This position will be a joint mentorship between the departments of Computational Biology and Human Genetics to study the genetic basis of Age-related macular degeneration. While this position is primarily computational, the project is highly collaborative, with regular interactions across laboratory, clinical and computational teams.

The Opportunity:

  • Opportunity to work closely with computational colleagues to analyze, evaluate, and perform integrative computational analyses.

  • Leverage multimodal high dimensional data to explore the different cellular populations that could play critical roles in Age-related macular degeneration.

  • Integrate human genetics results from GWAS and rare variant burden results with single-cell and other genomics datasets.

  • Work closely with laboratory colleagues in the design of relevant experiments to develop and validate biological hypotheses.

  • May also participate in method or technology development as a team with members of the Computational Biology, Human Genetics, and Ophthalmology departments.

  • Present at external scientific conferences and publish in high impact journals from scientific insights resulting from this researc.h

Who You Are:

  • Ph.D. in Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, Human Genetics, Biostatistics, Computer Science or related field.

  • Demonstrated proficiency with R or Python.

  • Experienced with human genetics analyses and interpretation (ex. GWAS, rare variant burden tests, eQTL, fine mapping, LD-score regression, etc).

  • Experienced with single-cell omics data analysis (ex. single-cell RNA-seq, single-cell ATAC-seq, multiome, etc).

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate about complex bioinformatics problems to both technical and non-technical audiences.

  • Independent, highly motivated, and highly collaborative with the ability to work together with multi-disciplinary teams of computational and laboratory biologists.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Background in Ophthalmology research is a plus.

  • Passionate about working in a scientific environment, especially one that is related to drug discovery and development.

  • Quick learner, curious about new areas and the opportunity to build expertise, and creatively take initiative to see your ideas implemented.

  • Able to perform at a high level in a fast changing and demanding environment.

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of California is $110,000 to $120,000 .
