General Summary
The Gene and Cell Therapy Institute (GCTI) is a newly created system-wide Institute under Mass General Brigham. The Institute will foster a world-class gene and cell therapy program that will leverage ongoing, groundbreaking scientific research efforts across the MGB system. The mission of GCTI is to bring together the community of MGB investigators which can utilize gene and cell therapy platforms to achieve their scientific and clinical goals and improve the health of patients. The Institute will differentiate itself by harnessing the exceptional strengths of clinician scientists, the large and unique patient population, and major discoveries throughout the hospital system to propel MGB as the leader in Gene & Cell therapies.
Personalized Medicine is a global leader in the emerging field of personalized medicine. We leverage genetics to improve the care of patients and to drive medical discoveries. MGB Personalized Medicine offers biobank services and core services to researchers and genetic tests for patients and is instrumental in improving the handling of genetic results in the clinical environment. We also work with novel technologies to facilitate genetic and genomic research.
The successful candidate will work closely with Exec. Director Strategic Planning and Operation of GCTI & PM, MGB Research Management and Finance, Directors of Core Labs and Faculty to support Pre and Post award grant and financial activities including budgeting, forecasting, creating monthly financial statements, variance analysis, cost analysis, and billing activities for GCTI & PM Grants and Cores, IT, Sundries, and other activities. The Financial Analyst develops and monitors all financial aspects and sponsor requirements of complex awards. Primary duties include compliance, budget development, proposal submission, oversight and maintenance, report generation to sponsors and leadership, and daily administrative and operational requirements for a financial portfolio.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
- Develop the annual operating budget for PM Cores and GCTI Cores, including Biobank Genomics Core, Laboratory for Molecular Medicine Core (PM), RNA Therapeutic Cores, and Gene Editing Cores (GCTI) based on historical results and performance targets. Oversee monthly financial reports for Cores, Grants, and Sundries including volume, expenses, revenue, and FTE reports for senior management to assist in the analysis of Core Facility performance.
- Monitors, reviews variances and trends, and performances variance analyses, comparing actual vs. budget, makes corrections, and recommends changes in policies and procedures.
- Reviews, maintains, and develops quarterly forecast reports.
- Proactively identifies process improvements and ways to optimize work activities involving Center financial reporting methods and workflows.
- Ensures personnel are allocated appropriately and resolve any discrepancies.
-Prepare slide for monthly MGBPM Lab Ops meeting including gathering project status from the Cores. Oversee Account Receivable & manage billing.
Grant Financial Management:
- Oversee the financial administration of grants from pre-award to post-award stages, ensuring compliance with funding agency requirements, institutional policies, and regulatory standards.
- Collaborate with principal investigators, department administrators, and grant specialists to develop grant budgets, projections, and funding proposal
- Monitor grant expenditures, revenues, and cost-sharing commitments, ensuring accurate and timely reporting to funding agencies and stakeholders.
Budget Development and Analysis of Grant:
- Assist in the development of grant budgets and financial plans, providing strategic guidance and support to principal investigators and project teams.
- Conduct financial analysis and forecasting to assess the financial feasibility of grant-funded projects, identify potential risks and opportunities, and recommend corrective actions as needed.
Compliance and Regulatory Oversight:
- Ensure compliance with grant terms and conditions, institutional policies, and applicable regulations, including OMB Uniform Guidance, NIH regulations, and other federal, state, and private funding requirements.
- Maintain comprehensive knowledge of grant regulations and guidelines, providing training and guidance to staff members involved in grant administration.
Financial Reporting and Documentation:
- Prepare and submit financial reports, invoices, and other documentation required by funding agencies, sponsors, and institutional stakeholders, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and timeliness.
- Maintain organized and up-to-date grant files, records, and documentation in accordance with institutional and regulatory requirements.
Grant Closeout and Post-Award Activities:
- Coordinate grant closeout activities, including final financial reporting, reconciliation of expenditures, and resolution of outstanding issues or discrepancies.
- Assist in the preparation of grant renewal proposals, progress reports, and other post-award activities to secure continued funding and support for ongoing projects.
Process Improvement and Strategic Initiatives:
- Identify opportunities for process improvement and efficiency enhancement in grant / core management procedures, systems, and workflows.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to implement best practices, standardize processes, and leverage technology solutions to streamline grant / core administration.
Use PeopleSoft, Insight, Vision, PowerPath, OnCore, GIGPAD, and other systems to monitor and evaluate financial and operating performance. Assist with other financial and budget items as needed.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, or related field required

  • Master's degree or professional certification (e.g., CPA, CGMA) preferred.

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in financial analysis, grant management, and/or sponsored research administration, preferably in a healthcare or academic setting.

  • Thorough understanding of grant accounting principles, federal regulations, and grant management best practices.

  • Proficiency in financial analysis, budgeting, and forecasting techniques.

  • Strong attention to detail, analytical skills, and problem-solving abilities, with the ability to interpret complex financial data and ensure accuracy and compliance.

  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with diverse stakeholders and work independently in a fast-paced environment.

Skills/Abilities/Competencies

  • Requires strong analytical skills.

  • Extreme attention to detail, excellent organization, drive, strong oral and written communication skills are required.

  • Knowledge of accounting principles and budgeting techniques as well as an understanding of healthcare and hospital financing strongly preferred.

  • Grant management experience is preferred.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills are necessary, including strong customer service orientation and the ability to work effectively as a member of a team.

  • Ability to interact professionally with contacts at all levels within the MGB organization and outside the organization.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and familiarity with Access.

  • Ability to work quickly and efficiently, prioritize tasks and meet deadlines.
